Garter Snakes?

would a garter snake be good with aspen beedding and the same stuff as a corn and what do they eat?

well garter snakes are awesome pets as i owned like ten at one time.. aspen would be a great substrate but when feeding them you might want to take them out of the cage as they dont eat mice in the wild like corns... they eat worms, fish, which could stick to the food and they could digest that and that would start health issues... but if you start them on pinkies you have to scent the pinky with fish to get them to eat it and then keep doing this for some time and then they usually get used to it... i think for one garter snake a 20 gallon long would be plenty of room as they dont get as big as corns, usually around 24-36 inches... have a heat source too... and 2 hides one on the warm side and one on the cooler side.. you can use an UTH or a heat light which ever you prefer.. hope this helps.. and when you get things set up i would love to see some pics!!!

Info source on Garters

Hey Kejen, There is an incredible variety of species and subspecies of Garters. For a free thorough description, one source I always rely on is Wikipedia, it shows their varied diet, although some enticement to certain foods may be in order http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garter_snakes
You might Google 'Garter snakes' also. Hope this link helps.

When I was looking into getting a snake a while back I looked into Garders I also have a horse manure pile that has lots of them in it that are like 4 feet long, brought me back to when I was lil and useto catch them but never remember them getting so big, must be something in the manure I cant believe the variety of morphs you can get try to google images its amazing.

Where I grew up in Minnesota, I'd see big garters all the time- maybe 300-400 gram snakes. I saw _tons_ that were in the 100-200 gram range, though. The big ones were memorable.

Lunch in the turd bin.

Hi Dakota11,
The garters in the manure may be drawn by the warmth of bacteria composting their favorite food. There may be worms in the cooler areas too which are a food source for garters, and bugs for the little garters.

YEs thats what I thought. I tried to post a picture here but it wouldnt allow me to. One day my bf brother was over with his daughter 5yrs old. well after they saw my corns we told them about the big snakes under the wood. Well I warned him to lift the board slowly I guess I should have told him why. Well If I have ever heard a grown man scream so loud in my life. He said when he lifted the board that there were like 50 of them and they began crawling over his sandals so I asked did you lift the board slowly? I guess you had to be here to see the humour.

Although garters are known for eating fish and such. My nephew(who I'm not to happy to admit) killed a garter in their yard and cut it open to find a mouse in it. I remided him that by killing that one snake he probably will be allowing xxx amount of mice to grow and invade his home. My sister wasn't too happy to hear that either...LOL

Opportunistic eaters

According to Wikpedia.org, garters will eat just about anything they can overpower, including: slugs, earthworms, insects, leeches lizards, spiders, amphibians, birds, fish and rodents. Some will even eat frogs and tadpoles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garter_snake subheading: ‘Diet’. But, I’m sure some breeders are familiar with persnickety eaters too.
