Getting bit

So I wanted to check on Raiden and while I was he bit me. I get so scared when they try to bite me for some reason and well it literally had no feel to it at all. I don't know why I get so scared. hahaha.

Natural instinct is to pull away. Try not to though, because if a tooth gets caught on your skin, you can accidentally rip it out :(

I know it's really tough not to pull away though, especially if you don't see it coming. I think the noise they make while they strike is what startles me the most.

My corn, when I first got her, must have bit me close to 100 times. Literally. Every time I'd take her out it was bite after bite after bite, for over a week straight. Eventually I started to bleed, and she was only a yearling then.
She did grow out of it, when I just kept her out no matter how much she bit. She realized that I am not going to eat her.

There are many reasons why your snake might have been startled, but don't be offended!

I have yet to be bitten and I consider myself a tough guy but I bet the first time I do get bit Ill flinch and jump also. Heck Ill probably get on here and cry to you all. : )

i can now let the corns bite me. i'm still pretty intimidated by the boas bad behavior, but i'm getting over that now too

Impressive! I've only gotten bit by my own corn (as I said, MANY a time), and wild garters when I was a kid catching them. If my ball python were to bite me... I would be a little less brave I think. He's only 6 months old, but his mouth is much larger than the corns! Luckily, being your typical ball python, he shies away or balls up when nervous.

A boa though... how big is your boa? :awcrap:

I'm always calm while I'm actually getting bit but have a hard time not flinching the next time one of them looks like they are thinking about it, which is stupid because all the flinching usually convinces them to bite me. After being bit a number of times, I usually get out the wussy gloves to handle all the ones more likely to bite, not for their sake but so I can feel calm while handling them again for a little while.

Depends on my mood. Some days I will handle the feisty ones and let them chew on me while I try to take photos, other days I feel jumpy so use a hook.

I learned from my first boa bite is that they have 2 rows of upper teeth.
I was like "huh?? fascinating!"
My worst bite, an 6ft boa. My fault and the guy that distracted me when I was tossing a FT rat in his tub. It took like 10 minutes to get him off my forearm. That's when I learned to take a credit card and slip it between my skin and the upper teeth.

Totally filing this away in the memory banks. Juuuuuuust in case Isis (5.5' red tail) ever tags me during a feeding. Hasn't happened yet, but since she was raised on live by her previous owners, I do have to zombie dance in the tank for a bit every now and then. So always a possibility.
