Getting bit?

got bit for the VERY first time today......

just a warning from one....

I was trying to get the female out for some bonding and the male, which is usually the sweeter of the 2 struck at me when i went searching the viv for him.....he came outta the brush i have in there and struck me once on the hand.

Is there known allergies or ANY health issues? rabies, allergies, etc?

it looks like 6 little pin pricks n just felt like a paper cut. kinda caught me off guard n freaked me a bit cuz they're both usually friendly.

I dont hand feed them, i use a tongs....so my only guess is defending it's mate.......

dang thing itches now

Just treat it like any small injury...keep it clean, band-aids and topical antibiotic.

Only mammals can get rabies, and not even all of them can contract it...there's zero possibility of snakes or any other reptile getting it.

I have one snake who is normally timid and shy. But, when he is on the verge of shedding he will become VERY testy. Hissing and striking at anything that comes near. Even food.

Ditto on Susan's advice. Also, just monitor the bite for any infections or strong discolorations in the days ahead.

What about salmonella? (spelling?).

I got bit by a rosy boa last week. I should say, a rosy boa tried to eat my hand. He would NOT let go and tried throwing coils around my hand. That was a teeny bit painful.

I didn't really notice the injury itching. It healed up really fast.

I got the same thing from my male Sunglow who thought I was stealing his dinner, yet I was trying to close the lid on the feeding container so I could do some viv cleaning. Well he let go of the mouse and sprung for my hand... Caught off guard and felt like a cat scratch! I just washed it well and watched it, was on my thump tip so it sorta hurt when doing other things, but it eventully went away with no problems. I have every allergy under the sun so if it was possible to be allergic to it Im sure I would of been, yet they dont insert venom or anything so as long as it was a small nip I dont think any allergy could come from it? Just infection from not being clean!

Yep, my blizzard was sniffing (for lack of a better word) at her mouse, but her eyes were on my hand at the other end of the tongs. She's the only one I still jiggle the mouse for. Sure enough, I knew she was gonna do it and bam! she got my hand. It stung after a minute and itched, but I cleaned it and now she can eat the immobile mouse, no more jiggling from me. That'll teach her.

As long as they eat in their cage, from tongs or just droping anytime that top opens its food on their mind especialy if you been doing that for a while. As for when snakes bite, I just clean the area bit, and hope that none of their teeth got pulled out.

thanks a lot all of you.

I believe he'll be shedding within the week here so perhaps that was just it. crabby from the pain n stress of the shed

just a love tap though......and teeth came out of me ok, and he seems fine now, Ill just give em space n feed em tomorrow n leave em both be

it's not the teeth being in you that I'd be worried about, it's the fact that he had his teeth pulled out that would concern me a little.

wait a minute... maybe I read that wrong. Did you mean that his teeth came out of the whole situation okay, or that some teeth broke off and came out of your hand (or wherever) without a problem?

slightly off topic, but...

I just had my savannah monitor out and he nailed me good. Got ahold of a chunk of skin on my arm, shook his head a few times, and did a little 180 degree Savannah death roll like he thought he was a gator or something. He wouldn't let go, so after about a minute or so of this, I had to dump a bottle of water on his head to get him to drop me.

I'd take a hit from my corn over that any day of the week. :angry01:

Don't know if anyone suggested this, and i may be too late, but i ALWAYS pour peroxide on any animal bites or scratches. One of the Orthopedic surgeons at my hospital has a very particular protocol for his dressing changes for his knee and hip replacement patients... debride with peroxide, paint on the Iodine, 4x4 guaze and paper tape. Some would disagree with the peroxide for the incision area but he has the lowest infection rate at the hospital... and a lot of the other physicians just use the iodine, so i would say that the peroxide does the trick!

Over the years working with a variety of animals I have been bitten by snakes, lizards, birds, rabbits, dogs, and usually the worst, cats. The best I've found for treating them is a good wash with Betadine solution and Neosporin applied with a waterproof bandaid and changed 2-3 times a day for several days. I had a cat go nuts on me once and ended up with 36 puncture wounds from just above my wrist down. Not only did I not get any infection, only one scar from it. So that's my treatment of choice:).
