Getting worried

So, I know that new snakes take awhile to eat, and I got my 2 corns on July 20th.. I've been trying to feed them once a week since I got them... Well as of right now, they are in the same tank (which I know is bad) I am getting the supplies this weekend to build a custom tank with 2 parts.. but as time goes buy, they aren't eating and I'm afraid one is going to eat the other... I keep checking on about every 2 hours and I'm getting more and more worried... and until the 9th I don't have money to separate them while i build the cage...
Not to mention... one of the snakes now comes into my hand when i stick my hand in the cage, I'm guessing he feels comfortable around me, but he still won't eat... I've checked out the feeding threads and have tried all the suggestions but none are working.. should I just keep trying once a week? and I did not try and feed them when I first got them, I put them in their cage for a week and let them be... any suggestions?

Do you have any alternative tank for one of them? Maybe being housed together is stressing them out.

Even a small 10 gallon tank with some aspen and a hide would be beneficial.

Immediate thoughts:

Do you have a tub with a lid that you can drill some holes into for ventilation purposes? I know you have to be cautious with these babies due to their size, but target and walmart sell all kinds of tubs in different sizes that come very cheap.

Also, have you tried feeding them in the cage or outside of it? If you use a bowl or other enclosure (a box would suffice) and place them in there with just the food being offered and try all the tactics you suggest you have that way, it may work. Sorry if you have already tried, just thinking out loud.

I think you are doing what you can. The only thing I can think of is set alarms at night to check and just keep doing what you are until you afford stuff.

As addicting as owning these snakes are though, it is good to make sure setups are ready to go for them before purchase. This is in no way a negative comment or wrist slap or anything like that. For all I know you may have thought you had funds secured and had personal stuff come up. No one knows your situation. Just a good learning experience.

I wish them both the best and hope they both pull through and become good feeders for you. Good luck!!!

I have a temp set up with a clear plastic tub at walmart I use bungie cords holding the lid closed and poked holes through the lid with hot skewers. It's not the prettiest but keeps them separated until the second tank is set up. It's under $10.00 and it works. Good luck

I feed them outside the tank in a little plastic carrier, and not at the same time of course... and that is all I have as far as another container, I actually just ran into some extra money a tub from walmart in about an hour when my husband gets home. That will have to do the job for a week until i get my cage built this weekend. I actually didn't know corn snakes were not supposed to be housed together. The petstore i bought them from even told me it would be alright. but since i got my corns ive been at this computer just researching all over the web and all the threads on this forum. I just wish I would have done all the research first... but shoulda, woulda, right? lol

You got sucked in by the cuteness. Happens to all of us, lol. I didn't research a ton prior and missed lots of stuff too. It's a learning curve going from owning cats and such (in my experience) to snakes, haha.

You will get it all squared away. How do they look? Have they been losing weight? I know you might not have a scale to weigh them, but I mean physcially in their appearance?

I'd also look up reptile vets in your area to check them out if you get a chance. I know that's more money, but as a last resort it's an option if you can get your hands on some to make an appointment.

they still seem to look the same, boon (my anery) used to be real mellow though and now he just tries dart away and will hardly let me catch him in the cage... roark (my classic) used to be that way but now he smells my hand and crawls right into it when i put it in the cage... for the most part, they stay on opposite sides of the cage (i bought a 50gal)

Im glad i bought so many different hides and multiple water dishes so when i get the temporary tub i have things to put in it while im building my custom cage, which i do have a thread that describes how im going to build it and i'm so excited to start.

as far as the vet, its funny you mentioned that, i just scheduled a wellness check up for both of them right before i read your post. the reptile vet here actually does first time wellness check for free. after a couple days of separating them im going to try feeding again and hopefully it will be successful.

Yeah, a lot of our reptile vets are cool about first time wellness check-ups too. I'm glad you are getting that done for them. At least you're covering all your bases and putting in the work. You will be a great cornsnake owner and be much more prepared for it.

See ya around the boards and good luck!

so my snakes have been separated for a couple of days, and since i separated them, they are really freaked out, one of my snakes that used to crawl into my hand kept scurrying away as fast as he could, then when i picked him up he started to fling himself all over until i put him in my hand ( i picked him up from the middle of his body) and my other one is acting the same... they both used to be mellow, idk what is going on.... also i tried feeding again today and STILL NO SUCCESS!

THIS FRIDAY i am putting a divider in my 50gal tank (making it into 2 25gal sections) and then getting 2 UTH for each side....

how long should i wait to feed again? any why has there been no success?? they haven't lost weight but its been almost a month and a half since they ate last.....

the tub i got has no way for me to put heat into it, but during the day my bedroom is a good 85- 90 degrees since i have no AC so during the day i dont think it is an issue but i need to get them a UTH and into proper cages

Unless they are losing weight, looking thinner and loing condition, don't worry right now. Until they are eating reliably I'd personally say a 'hands off' policy would be best. You want them to conserve their energy, not use it up being stressed.
When you have well-controlled heat sources to keep their environment stable, hold off on feeding attempts. When you have their conditions right, either a live day-old pink or a boiled f/t pink would be my choice to try. ('Boiled pinks' are thawed then have boiling water poured over them until they go pale and rubbery. A lot of hard-core food refusing babies will eagerly go for them)
