Ghost Corn Issue

This season I bred a Ghost from my line to a Silverqueen expectin all of the babies to be Ghosts....whether they would look like mine or like Silverqueens or something else, I didn't know for sure.

All of the babies hatched out Anery. After 2 sheds they still show no evidence of any Hypomelanistic influence.

This tells me that I have 2 different forms of hypomelanism at play here and that the Anery babies would be het for both forms.

I bred a different Ghost from my line, that is a full sibling to the one that I bred to the Silverqueen, to a non related Anery het HypoA and got some Ghost babies.

This tells me that it is HypoA in my Ghost line. And that the unknown hypo trait is on that Silverqueen. I am expecting that it is either Sunkissed or lava, but I really can't say for sure at this point without further breeding trials.

I am holding back 1.2 of the offspring to breed together in the future. I am expecting Anerys, HypoA Ghosts, Unknown Hypo Ghosts, and maybe some Ghosts with both forms of Hypomelanism from this future pairing.

Has anyone else experienced this when breeding a Silverqueen to any other Ghost?

I'll try to get some photos up later on. Any help on figureing out what's going on here would definitly be appreciated!!

Thanks,

Justin

If the silverqueen is from serpenco I do know Rich used to say "hypo is a 4 letter word around here"
My snakes from the silverqueen line so far seem to have hypo a, but I have had people say offspring from my other ghosts (Mike Falcon heritage) look like they have ultra in them

This is the first I've heard of an issue with Silver Queens breeding with other ghosts. You can always ask Rich. He originated the Silver Queen line and should be able to help you out.

You've either got another hypo gene at work, or the first "ghost" isn't a ghost at all but an anery instead. I've seen some "ghosts" that I swear are darker than the darkest anery in my collection.

I'd better give Rich a holler. The snake originated at Serpenco (or so I was told at the time) and then I aquired her second hand.

No way. I've got photos of them up in the chit chat section in my photo thread. They hatch along with Anerys but they are definite Ghosts. I have bred them out to prove them as HypoA and have produced second generation Ghosts. I didn't run into this issue until I bred one to that Silverqueen.

Hard to tell which photos in your other thread you are talking about. If you could please post photos of the parent snakes and of the ghost and anery hatchlings here so we know exactly which snakes are involved.

It's possible that the silver queen is not hypo A, but maybe ultra or something else. It's already been mentioned that "hypo" is a dirty word at Serpenco.

However, it's also possible that what you think is a ghost really isn't. I received a hatchling, sight unseen, that is supposed to be a ghost stripe. However, it sure looks like an anery to me and I will have to test breed her when she grows up to verify her genetics. I will not be comfortable calling her a ghost or selling her offspring as having hypo until I can prove it. Here is her photo that I took just a few days ago:

That does look like a striped Anery to me.

I haven't advertised or sold any of the offspring from this clutch because I'm unsure of what's all involved with them.

I have to appologize for not posting photos at the start of this thread or not getting them up here sooner. Got sidetracked.

This is a baby pile shot of the offspring taken right after hatching before I seperated them

OK..I was wondering if that was the pair, but wanted to know which was which. Has the male ghost bred any other hypo or het hypo female? Reason I ask is that he might be the one to question, if you really need to question. All that yellow (which I love, by the way), while it can be strictly from being a ghost, is a bit more commonly seen in the ultramel anerys. But the pile of babies, photo taken pre-first shed, might all be ghosts with alot of silver queen influence. I'm not an expert on Rich's line, but most of the ones I've seen tend to be on the darker side, like the mother. Lots to think about and test. I think you'll have a puzzle on your hands for a little while at least!

It is definitly a puzzle! But I'm just going to have some fun with it and mix and match and just see what comes out of all of this.

This was the first time I bred that particular Ghost from my line. I bred a full brother one year older to a non related Anery het HypoA and got Ghost babies.....and Ghost Mots. The older brother that bred the Anery looks exactly like the male pictured above but with less yellow.

Good luck with your experiences with "hypo".........

Thanks Rich. Have you had similar experiences while playing around with the Hypo genes with the Silverqueens?

No, not with the SilverQueens, but in other cultivars it was about to drive me insane. And from the looks of things, you all are going to have your hands full in the future putting positive IDs on the stuff you are trying to sell. Certainly I am pretty confident that my hair turned gray and began falling out right around the time this problem hit home with me. And that wasn't all that recently.... I'm sure some of you thought I was just crying "WOLF", now didn't you?

Yeah. You breed a couple of snakes together and you think that you know what the outcome is going to be and then.....Crap, going to have to figure this one out.
