Going to the vet's office

Okie dokie, I made an appointment for Billy for Friday at a vet that specializes in reptiles. I'm so glad we have one around here. Ok, I know y'all have to take your snakes to the vet, what do you take them in? Should I just put him in a pillow case or should I get him one of those tupperware looking containers that has the holes in the top? :shrugs:

He'd be fine in the pillow case, but you might as well get him a travel/ while you are cleaning the viv/ feeding box anyway. When I take mine to school they go in one of those storage boxes with the handles you pull up and click to lock them, holes in the sides. Easy peasy.

Sounds good. Should I put a little bit of aspen in there and put a box hide in it so he isn't too stressed by the ride and vet's visit? I know, I am a dork but I want him happy.. LOL!

It would be good if he poops, hehehehehe, they want a fecal sample. Yeah, I am gonna make it like he is riding in a snake limo and put some aspen and a cozy box hide, maybe the one from his viv just so he feels secure...
I think I have turned this snake in to my baby. All my real babies are growing up and I needed another one to take care of.. Geez, I am a dork.

Ahhh, you're no dorkier than any of the rest of us! Welcome to the Snake Mommy Club.

Make Sure You Sand The Plastic

If you use a plastic carrier of any type that you need to drill holes into, make sure you sand the edges of the holes as they are actually quite sharp.

I have a couple of different plastic boxes, one for transport and one for feeding and another one to keep him in while I clean his cage ( Cause I learned a long time ago you can't trust that little booger when he says, I will set right here mommy! lol)

They are so super cheap, and easy to make, plus those plastic containers come in so many shapes and sizes you can get a size that fits your baby and not have to buy something in a standard size that wouldn't fit your particular needs.

Just don't forget to use fine grit sandpaper and sand it when you finish drilling :)

It is funny how those little brats won't stay where you put them... Hehehehehehe.... Thanks for the advice about carriers, I actually found a few nice reptile carriers at the pet store where I get my frozen rats/mice. They are made for carrying your favorite reptilian friend and aren't a bad price either. The big one was only $10. Cool beans huh?
Becky, thank you for the welcome and I sure feel honored to be in the Snake Mommy Club :dancer:

I just transport mine in a pillow case or snake bag. They stress less I think when they feel like they are secure in a dark warm place.

I would have to agree. It may not seem fancy but I think my guy is better off in a snake bag. I had him in a see through carrier before and he was going crazy. After I got a bag he mellows out and enjoys the safety.

Yeah, I even thought about putting him down in a pillow case and then down into a carrier or box just so it's nice and dark and he won't stress. It's so funny how the pillow case is still the way to go. I know I say a lot about my brother on here but all of this brings back such good memories. When he started out catching snakes and putting row upon row of vivs in his room, it was the early 70's. Every time we would see him start out the door with a pillow case, we knew he was headed to the woods to look for snakes. He actually almost died from a Pygmy Rattler bite when he was 18. But it didn't slow him down and when he was healed, he was back out there doing what he loved. :)
When I went to the pet store to get my frozen food for Billy Boy over here, Adam, the guy who works there, showed me a beautiful morph king snake they have up there for sale. My 13 year old started begging me for it immediately. LOL! I think Billy is enough for now though. But WOW what a gorgeous snake!! I can't remember what kind of king they had morphed but he had stripes going down his body instead of around it. My God that snake was gorgeous!!! Adam was showing me all the different kinds of kings there are in a book and you could see the man really loves snakes. I was telling him about a guy at a different pet shop last week not knowing what kind of king he had in the cage and that when he described it to me, I told him it was a Florida King (how do you work in a pet shop and not know what kind of critters you have?) I know there are lots of kinds of king snakes but we have only two that the Floridians (that don't collect snakes) are familiar with here. The Florida (of course) and the Scarlet. Adam was shocked to know a Florida King was for sale in a pet store because he said they don't generally find them in pet stores, you will see the California Kings but not the FL's. Well, it was a Florida King and he was pretty and VERY angry. He was shedding and they had nothing in there for him to rub on and his shed was coming off in little pieces. He still had his eye caps on. I told the guy that is why he is mean right now but he didn't get it. Oh well... Oops! I've been rattling on... Sorry!

Went to the vet!!!

Well, we went to the vet, who happens to be a pretty big deal in the herp world. I bought his book and he signed it for me. (Told ya I am a dork) I asked him if he knew Jim McAllister and he said he sure did. That is awesome! That is who my brother studied herpetology under. Jim is unbelievable!! Anyway, it was neat to know and to also know that this doctor is on the executive herp board in our part of the state. So, I sure trusted Billy with him. Oh and Billy is indeed Billy, a boy through and through. He did tell me that although Billy is right at 4 feet long, he is only about a year, year and a half old. This is why his head is so small and he can't take the small rats. Whew! We were thinking he was around 3 years old. But Billy is in excellent shape and is very healthy. No parasites or anything else that looks potentially bad. He hasn't heard of anyone losing this guy either. He did say that Billy would bring some good money at a reptile show here and that whoever owned him must be crazy with the loss of him. But no one has put up signs or called the pet stores or vets offices. Weird... And you would think that with this doctor being the reptile specialists that everyone sees in this area, they certainly would have left a notice there. He did tell me that he would, just to be on the safe side since we don't know what he ate while he was on his own, suggest giving him a dose of wormer. It wouldn't hurt and this stuff has an appetite enhancer. Gee, thanks! LOL! I told him to do whatever needed to be done to keep Billy healthy. He took it really well and then we snuggled him up for comfort. This stuff also has an antibiotic in it. I couldn't tell ya the name of it, the name was very strange. OH! Hehehehe! They said since he is a butter that we should have named him Fabio because of the commercials! LOL! I think we will stick with Butter Billy. :)
I told them that I had most of y'all and my brother to be thankful to for all the great advice and words of encouragement. He said it sounds like Billy has a great new home and I am doing everything right.

~A question though, the doctor's assistant told me that she doesn't use anything but newspaper because she doesn't want to run the risk of her snakes getting an upper respiratory infection from tunneling, then pooping and then tunneling back through the poop. Billy always poops in the same spot and I clean it up immediately. The doctor came in and I told him what she had said and he said he wouldn't worry and he hardly ever sees a sick snake because of that. Have any of y'all had problems with this kind of thing??? He loves his aspen and I hate to take it out, ya know?
Oh! She also told me that even though Billy has the uth, in the day time I should have a heat lamp on top of the viv and then to turn it off at night. I thought that might get too hot and she said that he could bask and would like it and he would know day time from night time. BUT he knows day time from night time because his viv is in my bedroom and it is nice and bright. As soon as the sun starts going down, he is out of his hide and exploring all night. Correct me if I am wrong but don't they bask to absorb heat??? If he has the uth, and stays in his warm hide during the day absorbing that heat, is the lamp necessary? I have one so, it's no big deal but I took it off when I got the uth.

I wouldn't bother with the heat lamp unless it's really cool in the room. I'm keeping one on my gravid female's nest box to keep it extra warm top and bottom in case she lays eggs while I'm gone at work. Otherwise I never use one. I've found it tends to really dry the viv out.
