Good, Bad, or Normal?

Hi all!

I've been handling Isha as often as I can-which between pinkies is only about two or three days a week-and he does something every time I handle him. To start, I usually have to pick him up out of the tank. I know that waiting until he comes into my hand is best, but he never does it. If I stick my hand in there and wait he usually goes about his business and completely ignores me :). Once I take him out and handle him, he does whatever necessary to get down to the floor. I'm not saying that he's squirmy and fidgety. When he's in my hand, he travels down toward the floor and as he goes from hand to hand he just goes down as far as he can. When I do let him on the floor(on occasion) he lies there or languidly crawls about, shying away from my hand. He doesn't hide or burrow into a dark corner.

Is this normal? Or is it a sign of stress? If it is, what can I do to make him more at ease?

Thank you so much!

Sounds like a pretty chilled-out hatchling, so I vote "good".

If it was stressed, it would rattle its tail and strike when you went to pick it up, then would fight to be put down while you were holding him. Then when you put it down, it would rush away from you at top speed.

They're usually a bit skittish, so what you're describing sounds normal. Think you have a nice laid-back Corn there.

i wish my lil guy was as calm as that, even with daily handling (obvo not until 2days after he has had a pinky) he still tries to take chunk out of my hand when i pick him up

I hatchling would never slither onto my hand, what I like to do is what I call a "supervised escape". I just open the top of his cage and let him come out on his own, I just watch to make sure he doesn't get to anywhere that I wont be able to get him out of. Other than that he pretty much goes where he wants until he heads for somewhere like under the couch or something then I'll grab him and handle for a while. I'm not sure that there is any benefit to doing it this way but its easier to get him when he comes out of his tank on his own, rather than chasing him around his tank. Good luck ;)

I take it you sit on the floor when your handling your corn, and if so maybe the closest big object for him to slither onto is the floor?. sounds stupid i know, but let me explain :crazy02:
My corn, when im handling it i let it get a bit too low to the ground by lowering my arms then it just goes for the ground, if i raise my hands so theres no way even with stretching that he can reach the ground, then he quickly gives up and starts going up the arms, on the face, down the shirt etc. so try keeping your snake more raised from the ground during handling sessions

I think my snakes tend to aim toward the ground in their direction of travel, whether I'm holding them or have put them in a tree or whatever. I think it's normal.

I had Nagini out the other day on the couch. She too spent most of the time trying to get to the floor, but whenever I would hook around her mid section and pulled her back up to my lap she never coiled, tried to nip or rattle at me.
I consider this a good thing, heh.
