I found this guy out in colorado today, no biting, but just hissed the whole time. Beautiful gopher!

Very nice! Gophers do hiss, don't they? A gopher is the only snake that's ever hissed at me. They're gorgeous, though.

I couldn't help but notice what looks like a 'bulge' in the 2nd pic. Could that big dude actually be a big dame? Is it possibly gravid or is it just the camera angle? Anyway, it's a beautiful find, congrats!

I was actually thinking the same thing after I posted the pic, I was so excited when I caught him/her that I didn't even pay attention I guess! but it could be the camera angle as well.... I guess I will try to look at some of the other pics.

You're a better man than me for letting him go! I don't think I could've resisted that big hissing gopher! What a beauty!

next time he wont get so lucky! Sometimes you have to appease the snake gods! I had also just brought home some garters recently as well!

Gorgeous gopher and pictures! Do you happen to know which (sub)species it is? It does not look like the bull (sayi) or San Diego (annectans)...

I love gophers. Beautiful!

:-offtopic Would a WC gravid girl go ahead and lay in captivity, or would the transition be too stressful?

I caught a gravid Red-Bellied snake, which laid, which I hatched on top of a gas stove (pilot light) which I immediately released because they were the size of toothpicks!

COOL! That would be so much fun.

my best guess at the sub species is a great basin gopher; P.m. deserticola the only other close one is the sonora, but he would be darker at the tail than at the head.
