:wavey: HI Everyone! I lurked around the site for quite sometime and decided to join after the purchase of my very first corn!!! I am super excited, I have always wanted a snake but it was never possible until now. So here's our story....

We had been discussing getting a snake for quite sometime, so I started doing research and I had known for a long time I had wanted a corn snake to start with. But the BF had previously had a 7ft Albino Burmese, which he dearly loved. After a lot of thought and discussion we decided to snake shop! Me being the snake newbie wanted to go a see different types of snakes, handle them and see their different qualities. So we go to our local reptile emporium, and after viewing the snakes from outside of their enclosures we decided we wanted to handle a few. So I decided I wanted to hold the corn snake first. Our customer service experience was horrific, but that's a different story! A little "Motley" corn was placed in my hands..... She was so skittish and fragile, she was just so fearful. We could tell her handling had been slim to none. Not wanting to stress her we kept her out long enough to see her markings, determine it was a she, and see her calm slightly. We then went on to hold a few more snakes but ultimately decided on the female corn.

As we made our purchase and took our girl home. I started doing a bit more research as I wasn't entirely sure we received the truth about our new family member. We had researched the different morphs before we went our girl was certainly not a motley.... Turns out she is a Tesserra Corn! After a few days of settling in she is beginning to enjoy being handled and exploring of course for short periods of time, but nonetheless she isn't as skittish or fearful as she was that day in the shop. We haven't fed her yet as the shop said she had been fed the night before so we are going to keep her on her same schedule of one pinky f/t a week, until she becomes big enough to move up. I have attached a picture of her, though I know its poor quality it at least gives you a gist of what our girl looks like!

Alas she doesn't have a name yet, still trying to find one for her! Any tips, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated as I am new to corns and gathering any info I can!

Thanks So Much!

Beautiful snake you have there. Congrats on your purchase. I've also wanted a corn for a long time and just recently found one I like as well for a starter.

For what its worth, I like yours much better than mine. I didn't want to get anything too expensive while in the early learning phase though just in case something went wrong I always try to err on the side of caution. You can see, I even bought some food for my corn snake, but he still likes the frozen ones so far so these are simply waiting for him to get a bit bigger.

Hello and welcome!

She looks to me like a motley stripe, but i'm by no means an expert!

She's looks a like a beauty though!

The only suggestion that I would give would of been too let her settle in for at least a week before your first handling sessions, especially since you said that the snake was already a little bit skittish.

BUT since you have already started the handling.. The only thing I can think of would be to go out get a kitchen scale they usually run about 10-20$-and this way you'll know when she is ready to be moved up in prey sizes. I would also bump her up to 1 pinky every 5 days, instead of once a week. (they feed them less in the stores to try and keep them "small and cute looking" as well as saving them money on feeding the animals.) She'll take them no problem don't worry! :)

Good luck with the new arrival! :D

Thank You! I have grown quite fond of her, yours is gorgeous as well, kudos for prepping with food. We have considered raising our own but I decided to err on the side of caution as well and go with frozen until we get a good eating schedule going! I am already hooked and thinking of adding to our snake family in the future!

Hello and welcome. Appears to be a really nice motley stripe ("pinstripe motley") rather than a tessera.
