Habitat, sexing, and feeding ?s

Hi there;
Since I'm new to this site, I have a lot of questions about my corn snake and from what I'v read a nd seen so far I'm sure there is some one out there who will have the answers I seek. Here's my ?s,

#1 I have a vivarium that measures 18"hx18"lx24"w, is this going to be big enough for my snake when it is full grown, I've attached photos of it.

#2 I know that it is possible to sex a snake by length and thickness of tail, at least that's what I saw on several internet videos. If so, can someone give me an idea of what sex mine is. I'm I correct to say that a fat short tail is female and a thin long tail is male? Pictures attached

#3 Am I feeding my snake to much? right now I'm feeding my snake fuzzies every 4 days, usually one if it's an old fuzzy, 2 several hours apart if they are smaller fuzzies. Is this to much? I got him in June 2008 as a baby, right now he is about 40" long. He sheds about once a month. Pictures attached.

I know these are a lot of questions to ask all at once, but I would appreciate any answer. TKX

Well, let's start with #1. That cage isn't something I would personally recommend for a corn. It causes a lot of issues when trying to hold in humidity because all of the sides are screen. I had an adult corn in something similar to that, and every single time, she had a bad shed. I would recommend getting a vivarium (either a 15 or 20 gallon long). The 20L should last you well into adulthood.

#2- Sexing a snake by tail length is extremely inaccurate. If you really want to know, you need to take it to a breeder or reptile store that you trust and have it either popped or probed (this is NOT something that you can do yourself without someone experienced teaching/showing you how to do it).

#3- From what I can see, your snake looks pretty healthy to me. I, personally, would bump the feedings back to every 5 days, but that's just personal preference. Especially because if s/he was born in 2008, s/he's HUGE.

1. What's that on the floor of the viv?? I'd add one of those wire 6 foot long vines to give him some cover. Just scrunch it up and drape it around in there. It is very barren now.

2. Robbie is correct, but that looks like a male tail to me.

3. He's practically adult size! We usually base feedings on weight, not length or age. A good rule of thumb is generally a prey size that is the same as or no more than one and a half times the width of the snake at the snake's widest part. I'm guessing that guy could eat a weanling, and I'd feed every 5-7 days.

For the viv, I have three side of it and 1/2 the top covered with vinyl sheets of shelving paper, so it keeps the water from his water dish from evaporating to fast, and to keep my cat from being to nosy.

The stuff on the floor of the viv is mulched cocoanut, it comes in bricks and I presoak it, let it dry about 90% and then spread it out, it makes scooping his poop a lot easier, it's inexpensive and I can change it every 4-5 months. Simon likes to hide under it and play peekaboo. check the photo.

Someone may correct me here but isnt mulched coconut a bad substrate for corns. It has a high humidity level and that can cause respiratory infections. Also i would clean the viv out every 4-5 weeks not 4-5 months.

With the viv set up like it is, the little bit of extra humidity isn't going to hurt. I wouldn't recommend it in a glass tank, but for this situation it seems fine. Although I do agree about cleaning it a bit more often, though.

whispa, my 52" long cornsnake has very fluid like lumps on her lower body, about 5_6 lumps that have gotten smaller in the 2 months that i have been her carer. she is well looked after and fed every 6 to 7 days, as far as i know she is 3 years old. could anybody advise me as to what these lumps could be before i have to take her to a reptilian vet? any advice is recieved with thanks!

Kol, Sorry i dont know anything about lumps but you will be better off starting a new thread , you will get more response that way.
