Had a "snakes aren't that bad moment" today :)

I have snakes for a little over a year, and when I told my nephew I got a pet snake, his first reaction was "NO WAY AM I EVER TOUCHING THAT THING...I NEVER WANT TO GET NEAR IT...etc." Well, today was the first time he came to visit since I got my snakes (he lives in Washington state and doesn't get to Illinois much) and he held both my snakes for about an hour total...and LOVED THEM :)

We just got back from dinner and the first thing he says when he walks through the door is "can I hold the snakes again?"

Makes me feel pretty good that I showed him that snakes are cool and not "yucky" or "mean" (plus both my snakes were very well behaved while he held them) :)

Oh I can't count how many times this has happened I love it when people hate snakes on minutes then hold on and are like "they are cool".

The first time I wanted a snake was when my neighbor, a little younger than me got one. I went over there and held him alot. That was definitely when I fell in love with them. Took me awhile to finally get one. Lol

I always get the "They aren't slimy!" exclamation when a new person touches a snake for the first time. When we had family over the cousins all wanted to pet the snakes, it was much harder to get their mother to just touch one of them.

Yeah I know what you mean. My brother were the same about snakes, but now he kinda like them. I don't think he would get one though, but I've made up his mind about snakes.

Yeah over Christmas time half of m cousins wanted to the other half eventually held them but needed to be coaxed a little.

Congrats on the success with the nephew!! I love moments like that. I've experienced quite a few just in the week since I started working at the local pet store. It's definitely a great feeling when you have people walk in saying "EW, snakes, EW!" just to walk out saying "Snakes aren't that bad!" (Or, even better, "Snakes are SO cool!")

Just yesterday, we had a mom and her kids come in to look around. When they first came in, she commented that snakes were SO creepy and disgusting (her son was fascinated!), and I commented that snakes are actually great pets. She was taken aback, and obviously hoping her son hadn't heard me. LOL. By the time they left the store, though, Mom had already given Son permission to get a Gopher snake (so long as he can convince Dad of course!).

I also have three young second-cousins (all girls, mind you, lol!) who are all going to grow up to be great snake (and beardie) keepers someday, and a first-cousin (not a girl) who is deeply in love with boas, though he doesn't have one yet. (Coincidentally, that cousin lives in Washington State, too, and his mother--my aunt--lives in Illinois!)

My grandma is like a psycho snake-phobic and she wouldn't even look at them. After a while she did and began asking all kinds of questions about them. I'm not sure if she'll touch one any time soon.

I used to have snake phobia myself.. but after taking in Ares, my little amel, I was hooked instantly. Kudos to those that can overcome that phobia..it's worth it when you can.

thats awesome!! had my own moment like that with my gf the other day. always feels nice to get someone else addicted

I recently had a friend of mine over for drinks and had a similar experience. He's a vegetarian and had previously mentions he was uncomfortable with the idea of feeding snakes another animal. He also mentioned that snakes creep him out.

After hanging out for a while in the room with the tank but without mentioning it, he finally asked to go look at the snake. I grabbed her up and after seeing how calm she was with me he asked to touch and then hold on to her. I could see him melt once he held her and he even wanted to see her eat (good timing as it was feeding day). The feeding still creeped him out even though I'd explained the F/T (with a spin on it being better for the mice what with the gassing being better than constriction) but he later told me that Rev has totally changed his mind on snakes! Awesome!

Good for you, Erin!

I'm a high school teacher, and I keep corns in my classroom. I absolutely love it when someone turns around from frightened or otherwise negative about snakes to enjoying them. Kudos!

My husband's cousin stopped by yesterday with his two kids. The kids instantly gravitated to the ball python tank, so I pulled him out and showed him off. Then I moved on to the snow corn, this one they were willing to touch. I love the looks on their faces when they realized that a snake is silky and not slimy. I haven't told anyone I want to start breeding some day though.
