Hand wahing and salmonella

Spork

Cornaholic
I just bought another amel corn hatchling and I was wondering is it REALLY necessary to wash your hands after your done handling your snake? Is it possible for captive bred corns to have salmonella?

IMO...
If you ask a Health expert, they will tell you to wash your hands after handling any type of animal. But, I had three rabbits for a while, almost never washed my hands (my bad) and never got sick. The answer to your question that I would give you is that it's always possible, while very unlikely. You can get other diseases from snakes as well, even though it's, again, unlikely. I would say if it's really that much of a hassle, just get a hand sterilizer so it the process is quicker. Also, I would ALWAYS sterilize after handling a new snake, because you never know what it could have and you might give it to your other snakes or yourself. Also, feeding time is deffinately another time you should wash. As for simple handling of snakes you'd had, it's up to you. (Actual, it's all up to you, but that's besides the point...)

It's always a good idea to wash your hands after handling your furry or scaley friends. There've been a few times I've forgotten after handling my corns, and there's been countless occasions I haven't bothered to wash them after playing with our dogs, and I've been no worse for the wear.

It's definitely wise to wash after handling pinkies and fuzzies and whatnot. I personally feel handling dead mice and not washing my hands is a lot worse than handling snakes and not washing.

That reminds me of the whole reason they stopped selling those little tiny turtles that could fit in your hand at petstores: little kids were sticking them in their mouths and getting salmonella that way. :grin01:
