how much is to much handleing. ok, i know not to handle after eating. but what would you consider to much handleing. if there is such a thing.

Im new myself, but i think if it hasnt ate recently then you can't really over handle it, maybe too long is when it gets tired?

A couple questions

How old is he and how long have you had him? You don't wanna stress him out by over handling him.

dont have one yet. still trying to learn as much as possible before getting one. but when i do get one it will be very young and hopefully a crimson. i know to give it a week or two to get used to its surroundings, but after that how much is to much for handleing.

Well I've had my little guy for a week and a half. He's an '05 hatchling and I've only handled him twice. The first time was just to put him in his feeding container, but I just tonight I took him out for maybe 15 mins. It seemed pretty calm, but I was definitely sensing that he wanted to slither away on me. When I put him back in his cage he ran and found a place to hide. From what I've heard from others, it's best to just keep the handlings under 20-30 mins every couple days. This gets them comfertable with you and you may be able to handle them for longer periods. Right now I'm just trying to get a sense of what my snake's thinking. Others with much more experience than I will probably be able to fill you in with how much handling is appropriate for an older snake. I'm kinda curious myself to hear what others have to say.

I wouldn't say there really should be a "set time" when handling your snake. Take him or her out, handle for awhile, and use your better judgement on when to put him/her back. You'll probably be able to sence when your corn's "had enough", and eventually you'll tire of constantly keeping it from slithering away to the darkest corners it can find.

I'd say the only amount of time that would be "too long" is long enough for your attention span to run out, taking your mind off your snake, and risking an escape.

I handle my snakes whenever, only with the hatchlings do I follow the 48 hour "rule". I let the snake determine when it has had enough. If it is just kinda chilling out, I keep it out for a while. Usually a snake will start to get anxious and start moving about rather quickly. That's when I determine it's had enough. Just my method

cool, thanks for all the answers. i was wondering, cause i would like to just sit and chill with the snake while watching tv and stuff.

Thats what i do. My snake is one of the calmest i've handelled. Him and I watch TV all the time together. I usally wait 3 days or till after he's pooped. Have fun!

When you first get the snake he needs time to acclimate, gennerally 3 days.

then 5 min or so a day (excluding the 48hr after feeding) then slowly work your time up... mine dont sit still enough to watch TV with... they love to wander... anyway for TCR if you want to learn a lot before getting a snake... i would give you the best advice i can offer...get Kathy Loves book.

everyone talks about this book. how much is it. and im one step closer to getting the snake. im in the prosess of getting a 29 gal tank for 20 bucks.

Well, my female isn't a very sociable snake... so I don't handle her too much because she starts acting a little aggitated or nervous... now that she's about 4 years old she's so much more comfortable, but I can still tell that after about a half hour she really is tired of being constantly pulled away from hiding in couch cushions or curling up in afghans....

My male, on the other hand.... will happily hang out around me whenever he gets a chance.... he likes to be pet pretty much anywhere and will sit still for this... lol he's so funny. He's not the brightest snake in the world... either that or he just has ADD...

Really it does depend on the personality of the snake.... you shouldn't keep a shy snake out past the point where it seems to be more agitated, but you can more than likely make a really outgoing snake sit still with you since they tend to enjoy people a lot more.

Its usually like $9.99 at the pet store, but you may be able to get a better deal on ebay. Its definately worth it though.

You'll want to get the revised edition, it's loaded with more info, especially on the different morphs. It's 16.95, and you can order it directly from Kathy
www.cornutopia.com

With shipping the book is:
$19.60 per book sent via slower book rate mail.

$21.30 per book sent via Priority Mail [ 2 - 3 day delivery ].

This is from Kathy Love directly.
I bought The Cornsnake Morph Guide from her.
I also have both of her books. The Second one is a lot better.
