I have had my (appr. 5 mo old) snake for 7 days. I didnt follow the rules. I rearanged the tank on the second and third day. I fed her on day 2 and did not mess with anything for almost 72 hours. Then I put her in a different tank. today the 7th day Ive had her, I held her for the third time already. Needless to say she was in a hide not moving for about 3 days and since this afternoon when I picked her up she has been burrowed in the aspen bedding. I know why. When I have lifted her hide to check on her she just looks at me calmly and she did not regurg her meal nor poop yet.
My question is how much damage have I done to her psyche with my impatients and my early handling; and tomorrow is 7 days since a meal. should I dig her out and offer a meal or let her come out to look for it?

I would feed her tomorrow, then leave her alone for about a week. Let her settle in. I typically let new babies go without handling for several weeks, with minimal handling for feeding and cleaning.

Hey Hetfeildfan,

The information on this forum are nothing more then guide lines to help people out. You did not hurt your snake. I got a new butter corn 4 weeks ago and did not do anythings that this site would recommend. Now he did not eat the first day I got him so I put him in his tub with water and let him sit there for a week. Seven days later I put him in a feeding tub with a small pinky and put it back in his normal tub with Aspen around so he could not see out and left him for the night. The next day no pinky mouse.

So what I am trying to say is the information here is good advice. However, you own the snake can do what you want and can always fall back to the guide lines.

P.S. That butter corn was the first one not to eat right after I brought it home.

Love the Fatman

My hatchlings dont get handled for a week or two off getting them back from were i bought them i find them in general very flighty untill they start getting bigger cant understand why people would risk stressing the snakes for the sake of letting them have a proper settling in period

I don't think it's that they don't care... I think it's that they don't know cause i held my snake the same day i got him, i just didn't know that i should've waited a week or two

the odd snake that i have got i have offered food a couple of days after getting them home to bring them to a feeding time as my other snakes most have been fine but one took a lot longer to get going so i would say most will be alright but its a case of been better safe than sorry theres alot of people like that not knowing whats best for the snakes i have only been keeping snakes now just over a year but i had a good look on the net before i got them theres plenty of info out there i think its good for people coming to the forums to find out stuff at least those people show they care :)

today my girl came out to explore and I put in a pinky. she wasted no time on it. Then i thought it wouldnt hurt to offer one more. she took it and after a few hours she snuck off to a hide safe and sound. So i will just leave her be for another week or so and then start working with her. I m happy I think she will be so awesome. thanks to you all for the comments
