Handling a new baby

MakersMarked

On the outside looking in
Finally, five years after giving away my first corn snake, I'm a snake owner again. My 3-month old (tomorrow!) female bloodred from Stephen Roylance arrived yesterday. (Thanks, Steve! She's gorgeous!)

Following all the care sheets/guidebooks' advice, I put her directly into the viv to chill for a week. But I've seen some unboxing videos on YouTube where people just pull them right out of the box and start handling them.

So I was wondering: When you receive a snake in the mail, how long do you wait before handling them? Do you wait a specific amount of time every time, or does it depend on the snake?

From what I read in Kathy's book and on here, other then checking the new arrival out for any damage from shipping it shouldn't be handled in the first week. I will be getting an adult in a few weeks and that is what I am going to be doing, opening the box, checking him for any issues ( so I can post on here if I am unsure of something ) and then putting him in the viv.

Glad you posted this :)

The only reason to handle a snake immediately is to check it over, look for any issues and make sure he looks healthy. Then put the snake in the viv and leave him for about a week.

Good luck!
