Handling Corn Snakes

I have seen that all hatchlings and some adults are squirmy. I am raising a 09 hatchling now. Can I assume that the more I handle her, the more likely she will get used to it? How much handling is two much? I am also sure that large breeders don’t have time to handle all the babies. True or false?

Hello there.

To a large extent what you say is true. You need to realise that to a hatchling you are a large possible predator. Corn hatchlings are naturally jumpy and squirmy but the majority do calm or tame right down as they mature. There is the odd one here or there that just does not tame down.

Another point to note is that over handling is also not good as this can lead to stress and stress related problems.

Best of luck. All you need is Patience.

I am in a position whereby I have 32 snakes, not all of these are Corns.

I try to handle my snakes once a week for a couple of minutes at a time but in your case where you have perhaps 1,2,or 3 corns I feel that 2 or 3 minutes twice a week should be alright.

Please remember not to handle your snakes for at least 3 or 4 days after feeding them, they also do not like being handled while in the blue stage just before shedding.

Lastly, I would like to add that I in no way consider myself to be an expert on corn snakes and merely have advised on what has worked for me over the past 8 years or so.

When I first got into snakes I used to handle them every day that they weren't digesting that is to say I would hold them 4/7 days of the week. Only handling my adult once a week seems to have made her twitchy and defensive of her cage, and my smaller snake is fine. It really does depend on the "personality" of the snake as well. They'll let you know when they've had enough.

I hold all of mine 10-15 minutes a day 4 days a week and they all have tamed down and don't seem to mind at all:)

i play with my snake like twice a day everyday and had never had any problems. she is around 5 feet and she just loves to play and go outside.

i dont handle my corn that often because up to about 3 weeks ago i was in bording school all week and she seems fine shes just a bit squirmey when i do pick her up but after a while of me holdin her she settles down and jus sits or looks around
