Handling during pregnancy

Hi there
Personally, I don't handle my Females at all after Hookup.
I dont think there will be a problem though in the first 3 weeks after Hookup.
After 3 weeks I would think definitely no handling.
Just my humble opinion.

Ciao

I agree with rolandslf. No handling after mating. Only to move in and out of the feeding container and some gently feeling for eggs. Just handle carefully and minimal. All the eggs are bound together with a string. I don't know if that can breaks and what happens when it does. And it's nicer for the female as well.

I get my cornsnakes females out at least once a week during pregnancy for exercise. I don't take them out when we're getting down to the last week or so, but I do like them to stay well toned to cut down on the possibility of egg-binding.

My snakes can get exercise in their viv if they choose to. I don't think messing with them in that stage can prevent egg-biding

Could be. My snakes don't seem to be overly stressed by it, and it allows me a chance to check them over and make sure they are doing alright. They are out to be fed anyway, so they get 5 minutes of extra exercise before eating. They all eat well into their pregnancy and most don't refuse to eat until the last week or so.

thanks for all the good advise im a long way off breeding my new girls as i think tango is still to young/small but its got to get all the info in advance

My girl Sangria was eggbound last year. She would have laid 17 eggs but just didn't have the muscle tone to push them out. She is all recovered now and doing ALOT better, but I plan to handle her after brumation, and everyday right up to her pre-lay shed. She's a lazy thing and I don't want the same thing to happen again. She has always been freindly and never showed a fear of "hoomans", even as a hatchling. The handling sessions will be gentle and slow and stress-free but I think its important to get her "out and about".

i always handle while gravid. need to palpitate to be sure during early stages and for additional exercise to prevent egg binding, especially if feeding strictly f/t.

starsevol,
how did you remove the eggs from your bound girl? have only been able to have a vet remove once and coaxed out of another girl once, not to ever have another egg from either again.:( hope its better for you.

Grimm, the eggs were high up and she was in no distress, she did it all herself. It took almost 3 months but she took care of it. I did handle her and it helped.
She had no troubles in 2006, so I was caught unaware.

I had a Female last season who laid 43 eggs over a 3 week period.
By the time she was finished she was pencil thin.
Of the 43 eggs only 32 hatched.
I wasn't going to breed her this season but she picked up her condition fantastically well so I have mated her again. If she does the same thing again and survives I swear I will never breed her again.

Ciao
