Handling new corn?

Rriggs

New member
Hi I just got this corn 2 days ago and fed her the first day I got her. I was wondering how long it should be until I could handle her.

Congrats on the pickup!

It is usually recommended to leave them alone for about a week after bringing it home to let it settle in. Then you feed and leave it for 2-3 days and then you can hold them. As you've already fed it, just give it 2-3 days to fully digest and then enjoy your new baby!!

I'm a new corn owner myself and will be getting through those first three feedings before handling. Sounds overcautious and it may be, but allowing them additional time to become comfortable in their new home is important. My hope is by leaving him alone at first I can reduce the possibility of regurge and gain his trust just by him getting used to our smells and sounds. The more comfortable the animal usually the more positive the handling experience and less risk of refused or regurged meals due to stress. Enjoy from a far so you can ensure a successful relationship between the two of you!

Yes, I probably shouldn't have handled her , but I did anyway:eek: She seemed to do fine and got used to me holding her after a couple minutes but what do I know. I probably will take your guys advice anyway just to ensure that my snake likes me.:bird:

We can't guarantee she'll like you, but she'll appreciate a bit of quiet while she settles in ;)

If you need handling tips there are loads of threads on this, so try a couple of searches. Good rules to follow are: Pick up gently and from the side if poss rather than above (obviously not so gently that she can get upset and shoot off in the opposite direction). Handle often, so she can get used to it and won't learn to associate the opening of the viv to only = feeding time. And as you already know, always leave a few days after each feed before you handle, so you don't get a regurge.

Enjoy!
