handling question

Hello,

I've had my snake for about two months.I handle him about every day for 15 min.I put cut up peices of my tee-shirt so he would get used to my scent.when is the best time to hold him? I usually do after I shower so my hands are nice and clean, but will this throw him off as far as my scent?Another question I have is that every time I want to hold him I have to fenagle him out of his branch.he wont just wrap around my hand or come near me like i said I have to play with him for a minute until he unravels himself from the branch.is there a better way of getting him out of the tank?I never pull or pry him so some days i just dont hold him.
thanks guys!!!

Bryan

I usually hold my snake about three to four days a week for an hour. When my corn was young he never wanted to come out he whould squirm away as fast as he can, now I just put my hand in and grab him and he comes right out.

I dont think Snakes are quite as sensitive to their handler as some people seem to think.
I base this on observations i`ve made when visitors to my house have asked to hold Chione. If the handler is confident and can hold the snake so its comfortable, then the snake is happy, If the handler is nervous and jumpy then that makes the snake nervous and jumpy.
Of course, when you first go to get your snake it will, at first, think something like, "NOOO GO AWAY LEAVE ME IN PEACE" i mean, lets face it.. if someone disturbed your afternoon siesta you wouldnt be all lovey-dovey would you!
So anyway, i believe that regular handling gets your snake used to being handled, but that the t-shirt thing is pointless `cos they either can`t tell one human from another or couldnt care less who it is thats holding them.

As an aside, i handle Chione for maybe 3 or 4 days a week, 10-15 minutes a time, plus she`ll get shown to the various visitors who pop by and ask, curiously, why i`ve got an "empty" fish tank on display :)

I've only had my corn for about a month.

He's about two years old and was an abondoned pet that I brought home from the vets where I volunteer.

Despite being found out in the wild after being abandoned or maybe just lost he's very friendly and loves being handled.

From the first day I got him he has loved coming out for a bit of exercise in my arms and he doesn't seem to mind me taking him from his viv - often he doesn't want to go back!

He's only my first pet snake but I've handled quite a few before - mainly pythons and boas, but quite a few others too.

I agree with what blito said - It really depends on your confidence as a snake handler.

Veni ^_^
