Hardware Cloth size for breeding rats, 1/4 inch OK?

I am building a breeding rack for rats. I am wondering if 1/4 inch hardware cloth is big enough for rats or will they require something bigger? I have some leftover from a mouse breeding rack I built. I have read several places that say it is big enough and some say they believe it is too small. Gimme your opinions, please!

1/2 x 1/2 would be so much better IMHO... I worry about the qaulity of the food that goes into my animals, and the qaulity of life the feeders may have had.. I believe it might play a part in end nutrition for my snakes...
 
If I were making a rack I would use 1x1/2 for the tops or at least for the dropped feed box section. This way I would know they could get the food for sure. That if feeding lab block, if you feed a home made blend or seed mix the dropped feed box is rendered useless as tiny food bits would fall through quite easily. Have fun and post pics when you have some!
