Hatchling Containers and Waterbowls

Dragontails

New member
I have a issue with hatchling containers. I have Mainstays Entree Containers (bought at Walmart) with the Dimensions of 7"W x 7"L x 2 1/4"H. They were really reasonable 3.95 for 16 containers and completely stackable. My concern is what type of waterbowls do I need? I dont know what everyone uses and with the height of only 2 1/4" what do you all suggest? Right now, I have been saving snapple caps but it does not look like it would keep water very long. Looks like I will be watering them daily with those. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Amanda

I recommend going to a hardware store and goto the plumbing section find PVC "End Caps"
They go on the end of white pvc pipe. You can find them in lots of sizes and in the low pressure stuff they are flat bottomed so they work perfectly.

I use glass votive holders found at walmart in the candle section.

I'm not sure the exact size, but I use the nacho cheese cups you can get from any restaurant supply store. Cheap and disposable. I have PVC cups for my deli cups when/if needed, and they're a pain the keester to wash at the end of the season.

Definitley the 2 oz solo deli cups purchased at superiorenterprise.com! Cheap enough to toss and replace whenever one gets dirty!!

Another Question.... Sorry guys... Thank you to those who have repiled!

The 2oz solo cups dont tip in the snakes containers?? Also, what does everyone use for their adult corns for waterbowls for them. Right now I have square tupperware for waterbowls but they tip them all the time! It drives me nuts. I could feed them one night and come in the next day... low and behold tipped water bowls lol... Any suggestions?

I use Gatorade lids. i have allot of them. * Added * for the adults i use a dog's water bowl.. I look for ones the have notches in the side so you can pick it up. If you flip the dish over and look underneight there is a space around where the bowl and the outside wall.. I use them for 2 reasons. 1 it is a water dish. and 2 it doubles as a hide on the cool side.

At the dollar store they have these small square containers with lids - 9 or 10 pack costs a dollar. They make perfect water dishes in my 4qt sterilite shoeboxes. The lids are great are to put their prey on as well.

The sometimes tip. But I've found them to be better than soda or gatorade caps. I use napkins for hatchling substrate, so if they tip, no biggie. Just replace the napkin.

For adults I use these from IKEA. They're perfect sized and cost 29¢. They can also be a hide for smaller snakes.

They don't tip when placed in the 7 x7 x 2 1/4 inch gladware sandwich boxes. There's just enough room for a hatchling to get his head/body into the bowl to drink. The lid keeps the cup from tipping over. I do have a tendency for the more active hatchlings to somehow get a corner of their napkin into the cup and then wick the water out.

I know what you mean. I have 3-4 babies that do this to me almost every day. Drives me nuts!

As for some of the bigger guys, I like to use sour cream or cottage cheese containers. The 8 oz. ones. I just cut a hole in the lid, about 2 times the diameter of the snake, and put the lid back on. These work great and I have only had one to tip his over. These are easy to clean and come free when you buy the stuff inside. LOL
:p

I'm going to use the sandwich containers this year. Hopefully that will help. In the past I've used these translucent pencil boxes I found at wal-mart. The were tall enough for the bowls to be tipped over.

It's funny, because there are some who never ever tip their bowl. And others who will tip it 5 min after I just got done fixing their cage because they tipped it. They make me crazy sometimes!! :headbang:

I use these special racks that some guy in SC makes and the 2oz water dishes don't tip as the lid gets in the way. Plus, they only run $60 shipped.

Have I said too much? ;)

Just curious....do you have a picture of the dog dishes?

I use Van ness bowls. http://www.vannessplastic.com/heavyweight-dishes.htm I use model c3w. they are a lighter weight and little smaller in height than the heavy weight ones. but i do have both. Mine is similar to Matthew's post (blueapplepaste) His brand is cheaper than mine. I find mine in dollar stores, target, and smaller pets stores. You will be surprised where you can find them. Grocery stores. I seen one today for $1.20. Forget petco, petsmart too pricey. I also believe Brent (Drizzt 80)use's them. He post allot of pics in a blue bowl that looks similar to mine. but i can get you a pic if needed.

My newborn hatchlings go in 8oz deli cups. I use the small 3/4oz cups for water. I staple one of the 3/4oz cups to the side of container, then use a second to nest inside it. They don't get shuffled around and are easy to remove for cleaning or travelling. This size works well for them for quite a while and they can easily fit inside the water dish for a bath.
