Hatchling corn snake set up help!

Hey everybody. Got my first baby corn snake (noodle) last Tuesday and she ate for me last Sunday. She's been hiding a lot but I sort of expect that from a hatchling. Got her from bhb reptiles, and I'm guessing she's about a month and a half old? Let me give you some details on my set up. I've currently got her housed in a Exo terra breeding box large. It's about 5 gallons. I gave her 2 hides on the hot side (using UTH hooked up to thermostat) and 1 hide on the cool side. Hot side reads about 86F. On the cool side At night it gets about 72F, thought that was a bit cold so I bought her a small fixture with a 40 watt moon light bulb hooked up to a light dimmer. Cool side reads about 80F now. I have a cork flat coming in also, thought about creating another hide with that.
Is she okay staying in a 5 gallon for a few months with 4 or 5 hides, or should I bump her up to my 10 gallon already?
Any suggestions and advice is much appreciated :) 😁

Hey! Cute set up. Hope you have something larger ready soon ;) my guess is she'll grow like a weed!

Personally I would ditch the bulb altogether. 72F is perfectly acceptable, even for a daytime temp IMO. Every snake is different, but I know that my corn likes to hang in the coolest parts of her vive all the time, and her ambient temp is usually around 76F.

All the best! And congrats :)

I never regulate the cool side for my snakes. Think for a second; are they always going to find somewhere in the mid 70s AT NIGHT in the wild? Even in winter, when I let the temperature in my house drop to 65 degrees, my corns are equally to be found on both sides. When they feel too cold, they go to the warm side and get cozy.

Thank you! I think I'm just being a bit paranoid! I ordered a 10 gallon for her with a some supplies which should be coming next week. My set up will drastically changing within the next week or so. When I get everything together I'll post it here!

You're right. But I want to see her being active at night with a low watt bulb that won't affect her activity at night. My room is pretty dark so something illuminating the terrarium during day hours would look very nice..

She's just precious. I'm comfortable with the cool side going down to 60ish, as long as the warm side is 85. Well- not the whole side- the UTH. She'll be fine in a 10 gallon- even a 20 long.

Thanks Nanci! I'm so tempted to buy more :/ I'll see how her growth is, eventually I'll be getting a 20 gal when she can handle it, she's so tiny! Planning on giving her around 5 or 6 hides[emoji16]

If you want to light up your tank at night for viewing, I strongly suggest red (or colour-changing) LEDs! They emit virtually no light :) I LOVE them. You can get a 4ft strand of these amazing rainbow LEDs that do all kinds of cooky stuff from Ikea for less than $40.

I would go ahead and get the 20L right away, you will save some money since you will need it in a few months anyway. If you think about it, when the babies are born they have a whole world to travel, so a 20 gallon tank is definitely NOT too big! Just provide lots of hides, smooshed toilet paper rolls half buried in the substrate are favorites, as are bandaid and toothpaste boxes. Not terribly pretty, but they are perfect for the wee ones that will outgrow them in a few months anyway, save your money for the bigger hides if you want a clean look, they will be in them before you know it.

Okay so most of my reptile stuff from LLL reptile came in today. Except they were out of stock on their creative habitat 10g. So that might take a week to come in -.-
But using this red bulb at night with the uth on 24/7 made my snake look a lot more active at night from what I've noticed..she was crawling everywhere, saw her drink ALOT of water..just a crazy difference. Then when my day bulb came on she went to the warm side and got all cozy [emoji16]
