Having Mixed Thoughts...

Derp snake says hi.
Hey guys - sorry, I know I've been MIA for a really really long time! I'll try to be more active now that school's almost out. :) But I have something that I wanted to kind of gather other's opinions about.

So I've had Loki over a year now. Jeez. seems like I just got him home yesterday! Now over that year, and especially since getting Tucson, I've kind of come to the realization that I don't think colubrids are really the kind of snake I like. I'm more of a boa person. I vastly prefer handling Tucson to handling Loki. Tucson will just chill in my hand while Loki is here, there, and everywhere, getting tangled in my hair or a chair (hey that all rhymed!) or some other hard-to-dislodge place. Handling him is exhausting so I just don't do it much, which makes me feel like I'm a bad snake mom. I know that Loki doesn't care, but I have my snakes for fun and because I like having them as pets, not to breed them or anything. So I like being able to enjoy handling them.

There's a local wildlife museum that I may be able to donate Loki to. With his extremely docile nature he could be used in their program where kids get to interact with the animals. If they were for some reason unable to take him, I would take every measure I could to find him the absolute best home possible. (although I'm thinking I would rather just locally rehome him)

Writing this all out, it seems silly to be so self doubting. But he was my first snake, and I feel like I'm giving up on him/abandoning him. I guess I just need some consoling from anyone who's been there.

ETA: Loki now has a classified ad that anyone who may be interested can look at.

I don't think you're a bad snake mom! You just prefer your calmer boa over a more active corn snake. Funny, I used to keep boas, and sold them off because I preferred interacting with my cornsnakes more!

It's just a matter of personal preference, and it doesn't make you a bad keeper. You actually sound like a great keeper, because you're very concerned where Loki goes to live.

If a reptile can go to a better/more attentive/etc. home than it currently has, it should go there! They do not care who gives them a mouse every Monday, but they do deserve a clean, escape-proof enclosure of their own with the proper temperature gradient and clean water. If you trust the person taking Loki can provide that as well or better than you have, then all is well in the world. This isn't giving up a dog that will miss you every day of it's life, but it IS placing an animal in an environment where you can only hope it is properly attended to. You are going through what all of us that breed do, only the attachment is even greater with an adult, I can only imagine a first pet snake! But if you are sure it will be properly cared for -move on to big boas. Don't be surprised if your reptile karma brings you back full-circle, though. Funny how so many of us wind back up with corns and leopard geckos years after "moving beyond" them. Rats and rabbits just take feeding to a different level. Nowadays I allow myself to buy anything that will never need a meal larger than an adult mouse. :eatpointe

It takes experience to really discover the pet that suits you best, I rehomed my beardie for the same reason. You are a good owner, you are looking out for the best interests of your animals.

Well, as long as I'm living under my parent's roof (and I'm 15 so that'll be a while) it's dwarf boas for me. ;) But they're just as much fun as their 9' counterparts, just smaller, and not rabbit eaters! :)

Thanks, Weda. I figured that time would tell if I liked colubrids or boids better and I guess I've picked. But yes, I'm making every possible effort to make sure he goes to the best hope possible.

Thanks for the reassurance, guys :)

Awesome update!

A very good friend of mine is taking him! She loves him to death and jumped on the chance to take him. I'm sure i'll be getting a ton of picture updates, and he's only moving like an hour away. So, yay! I'm excited.

He leaves tomorrow.

Great to hear he's going somewhere he will get all the lovins he would like. :)

Being young, you still have lots of time to figure out your perfect companions.
