Having problems

Hey, I'm new here, and I havn't actually gotten a snake yet, (if all goes according to plan I will be getting one tomorrow)
the problem is that I havn't been able to get the temperature in the tank to be right. I have a 6'' by 8'' reptitherm heating pad, and a 10 gallon tank. I'm using newspaper for a substrate. put in 6-8 layers or newspaper, the temperature at the surface of it was 75 ish, so i took it down to 4 layers, that got it to 80, when i took out 2 more, it went straight to like 95 which i know is WAY to hot... I don't have a basking light, because someone told me that it wasn't nessecary at the moment as long as that heat pad works.....pleas help!

Well I don't use newspaper and I don't really recommend it :/ Temps don't have to be exact, as long as you have a cooler side and a warmer side that isn't "too hot" you should be just fine.

yeah, he said aspen chips were best, but for the moment i'm using newspaper because i have an abundant supply of it lol. nice to know that the temp doesn't have to be exact, i was about to really start getting worried, you know not having the tank right, and getting the snake tomorrow lol.

To control a heat mat, you need a thermostat. Most will get way too hot for a Corn without this extra bit of equipment to keep them cool enough. The floor of the warm side, immediately above the mat, should be around 85-88. A thermostat will do that for you.

Also keep in mind you sould measure the temp on the glass not the surface of the newspaper) as the snake will probably end up under the newspaper at some point.

I don't use newspaper either, use aspen snake bedding. Snakes prefer it to newspaper, they love to burrow in it and make tunnels. My snakes are usually on the cool end which is around 76 degrees. I provide lots of hides for them but they still love to burrow, it gives them something to do and they love exploring and "hunting" at night.
