Havre De Grace tomorrow (Sat, Jan 11)

Anyone know if tomorrow's show in Maryland is worth going to for a family? Enough to do and see? I know it's early in the year so I'm not expecting much. My thing is it's about a 2 to 2 and a half hour drive from me and I want to be sure if we go, that it will be worth the gas and time.

We basically want to get a look around at future morphs we might bring in, have the kid be able to see some cool lizards and snakes, possibly hold one if someone offers (not going to ask), and look around to purchase some feeders, bedding, and maybe hides.

Thanks in advance for letting me know.

I went to the one last month and I as so disappointed. It was very small, mostly Ball Pythons and a few Corns. Prices ranged from "ok" to "are you sh-tin me?" But if your close its worth the $7. The room was small and no, there was not much to see or do.
There were snakes to hold including a 37 foot Green Anaconda, and there were a few lizards but not many. It was very BP heavy.

Im waiting for Repticon in Timonium next month.

That answers my question then. Not worth the drive. Not unless there are sellers on here that are guaranteed to be up there and can change my mind. I can wait for the next one at the PWC Fairgrounds in Manassas at this rate.

Where is Timonium?

Yeh, Im not far and I found it to be a waste of time. There is a guy from here that texted me and told me he would be there, If I remember his site Ill get you in contact wit him, he has amazing deals and will work with you, his name is Jason, and he's a great guy ! Ill look through my emails and try to find his contact info and repost here.

Can you see the vendor list online? You can get an idea of who is going to be there based on that. Rescues/reptile groups are a lot more likely to be friendly to kids than vendors, especially when it comes to interacting with animals (and that's who usually has the really big snakes-at Repticon here, there's a reticulated python that is often there as a demonstration animal), although people who give seminars/workshops often are willing to take that time as well (Sand boa morphs, especially, often has one of their children walking a snake or two around to everyone at a workshop to hold/touch if they want).

So does repticon go to these Havre De Grace shows?

Thanks Frog for the info man, if you come across it, that would be great. Really if there is some stuff for my kid to do and I can get feeders and hides, it would almost be worth going. Just want it to be interactive enough to engage a five year old and cover my immediate future needs til' later this spring.

Can't find the vendor list for tomorrow. Anyone have a link? Didn't see it on the MD Reptile Farm site or google.

East Coast Serpents ! Awesome.

I've been to the Havre de Grace show about 3 or 4 times spread over 5 years and every time I've enjoyed the experience. It is not a big fancy show, though, and what is there varies widely from one time to the next. It tends to be pretty BP heavy, but then I think most shows are. But one thing I've liked is that it is usually not too crowded so you can get some good conversations going with vendors. At some bigger shows I've been to, they just don't have time because of all the people.

You'll almost certainly be able to get food, bedding, and hides. As far as seeing future morphs you might want to pick up, you most likely won't see any high end corns there. Repticon, which will be in Timonium (basically Baltimore) in February, might be a better bet for you. It should be a considerably larger show, and I think it is a little closer too.

I wouldn't hesitate to ask a vendor if you & your child can hold a snake. Just be upfront that you don't expect to make a purchase of a snake that day, and allow them to decide yes or no. Many herpers really want to encourage new people and especially young people to get into the hobby, so they are very happy to let a child have the experience of holding a snake, as long as they have one where it is appropriate to do so. BPs are probably better than corns for this purpose because they are less likely to squirm out of the child's hands.

In case you don't have it, here are links to the websites for both shows:

KC,

Thnx for the info. I think with the weekend stuff I have to get done and other obligations I have going on, I am going to wait on this show and try repticon. I looked it up from the link you sent and it saves me 30 minutes (maybe more) on gas/time and will have more kid friendly stuff from what I am getting from you all.

I can buy one more small purchase of pinks/fuzzies to get me through the next 3 - 4 weeks and hold out for that. They haven't outgrown the hides, I'm just trying to theme up the vivs a bit, so I'm looking for original, cool and unique hides vendors may have at the shows.

Any of you plan on hitting repticon? Would be fun to meet some others from here and swap info. Also, can anyone here or at the shows sex snakes? I want confirmation on my Anery (Cruella), just because the guy I bought her from was kind of back and forth upon me exiting the store about the sex of the snake, but then seemed positive as I left that she's female. It being my first purchase, I wasn't aware I should have him maybe do it there or prove to me before walking out with it. Never crossed my mind I'd get interest in breeding atm.

If not, is there anyone in my area (Northern VA) that may do it no charge or real cheap? I've checked with certain vets, but they seem to want a lot for an apt.

If Cruella does for some crazy reason end up male, I want to find a suitable snake (roughly same age as Leoric) to pair with him. I got him from a reputable breeder on CS here and trust the male label.

Anyone head up today? If so, let me know how it went. Pics would be cool, but if not, I'll check out their FB page when they post in the upcoming days.

Im not, Its just not worth the drive for me based on my last experience there, not saying it was bad, just was disappointing to me.
