Ok well today I had my big snake out...Sarge, hes about 38 inches long. He made a wheezing sound at a rate of once about every 30 seconds. Now he recently refused his last meal, and I just switched his substrate from aspen, back to paper towels. I also do not know his sex. So i thought he stopped eatting because its mating season, but maybe he stopped cuase he could have a RI. help please. Does this sound like a RI?

First, figure out if he's wheezing (from his lungs) or whistling (from his nostrils). My big black ratsnake will whistle from his nostrils when he's due to shed and it's very distressing for me as the first thing I think is 'aaarg, RI'

How long has he been off food?

well he just shed last week, and this past thursday (3 days ago) was the first time he refused food, with is either a rat pup or adult mouse. but i figured he stopped eatting becuase he is looking for action. The nose is coming from his head (either mouth or nose) i think. I put his head close to my hear and oculd hear it better. but like i said it made the noise 1once every 30 seconds.

Well, the standard treatment it to increase his heat in his viv to induce something like an artificial fever for 3-4 days. Keep him dry (only a small waterbowl so there's not too much evapouration) and keep your fingers crossed.

no, my name is from my college, i live in NJ, but my college is the same name as the city you are thinkin of.

And i will increase temps a bit to see if that helps. He is still very active and i think looking for a mate.

UPDATE:

Its about 5 hours after i noticed that he had a bit of a wheeze. Now he is somwhat coiled up in his tank, like laying, not really exploring or doing anything active. Well he seems to be rubbing his nose on the side of his body, and is like sneezing. A few times i noticed he was he would slowly open a bit of his mouth, like the side of his mouth and then just close his mouth after a few seconds. I am very concerned, and have his heat still on. He is a larger snake, so i am sure he can pull through this. Is there anything else I should look out for?

yea well this all happened today, so im going to see how he progresses through the night, and into tomorow, I will call tomorow, but i dont know if the offices will be open because its presidents day. but well see

Sounds like an R.I. to me and one that is progressing. I would get him to the vet ASAP. No sense losing an animal to R.I.

Ok well i bumped up the temps and kept the temps warmer longer at night. I had him out last night and couldnt hear anything and he hasnt opened his mouth that I've noticed in the couple hours i was sitting near him. So over all he hasnt made a soound or seemed to appear to have any symptoms.

What sort of temps are you getting at night? You should be keeping temps in the low 80's all the time, not just in the day. For now I'd keep temps around 90 on the warm side for at least a few days.
