Does anyone mind explaining to me how the sex of a corn snake is determined? I just call bentley a "he" but it would be nice to know the actual sex. I have been told only specialists can tell, but if anyone can help, please let me know.

I am new to all this and am far from an expert. According to the information I've read, the only way to tell for sure is by popping or probing. Popping is done on hatchlings and very young corns and involves applying pressure to 'pop' the hemipenis out (if a male) or not (if a female). Probing invloves inserting metal probes. Either should be done by an experienced herper.

I have only read about the process and have not attempted it myself, but am hoping to learn how at one of the herp shows. There are other visual ways, but they are much less accurate- looking at the shape / length of the tail, counting scales etc...Doing a search (above) on the forum on "popping", "probing" or "sexing" should give you some good information.
Kathy Love's book on corns - The Comprehensive Owner's Guide has some great information on it too. You can order it from her website: www.cornutopia.com
Hope that helps....

Well, looking at your avatar (if that is in fact Bently), I'd say he's either a he or living an alternate lifestyle  . Take a close look at where he's crawling and tell me that doesn't look like something specific to a woman's anatomy

I know, sometimes I have too much time on my hands, lol :sidestep:

Ok, but seriously Deb pretty much covered it all.
