Heat Lamps

Scrub

Woops... LOL
I went to the petshop today, to ask the guys there what i would need for a snake.
they reckon that if you have heatlamp with a thermostat on one side of the tank, then that is all the snake needs for heat. Is having the thermostat set at 84 in the day and 72 at night alright?
Will this provide the proper temparature gradient within the tank?
Thanks,
Chris

You do not need it to get to 84, 82 should be fine. And also somtimes heat lamps dry out a cage too much, most people use a UTH ( under Tank Heater). Any other questions?

Uth

The guy at the shop said that i should get a wooden viv with glass sliding doors so as to try and prevent the greenhouse effect within the tank. Is this right? I dont think i can use a UTH on wood, can I?
thanks,
Chris

Stop listening to these guys. I think they are wrong on both parts.
They seem to be giving you general information with the heat lamp. You don't use a heat lamp with corns a uth will do the job with 80-85 on the warm side and 70-75 on the cool side.
A wooden Viv to me would create more of an greenhouse affect than a glass 20l tank and a screen lid, letting the "heat" escape.
Here a link or two to read.

by the way, is it alright to have music/tv on near where the snake is? because where i plan to put my snake is very close to both of those.
chris

Near t.v./stereo may stress them out, especially if its up load. Sound puts out lots of vibrations. Could you move them so they're not right next to it?

It doesn't seem to bother mine.

theres a general unwritten rule that pet store clerks dont know jack crap about snakes.

heat lamps are pretty much so useless for corns for a variety of reasons: they get really hot. it's difficult to control the temp, a heat lamp might get the tanks temp up to 100 degrees in no time and some days it'll only get around 85 degrees depending on a variety of variables.
snakes need belly warmth, not ambient air warmth. a UTH with a rheostat is far better in keeping the temps around the substrate where they should be.
corns are nocturnal, the bright light of the heat lamp might stress out the corns too. natural light from a window in the room is enough. dont put the tank in direct sunlight though.

and also, lamp bulbs are expensive, you'll probably spend more in replacing bulbs than in getting a UTH. basking bulbs for my turtle's tank run anywhere from $8-10. and they only last 3 months at the most before they blow.

I wish you guys would quite painting all pet store clerks with the same brush... I feel I gave out pretty good information. I always kept up with the newer husbandry techniques on all the pets I sold. It seems that most of the info. on here coinsided with the info. that I gave out.

I have a number of friends / coworkers who also knew what they were talking about...

I do know why you guys feel the way you do though, the number of people who "don't know jack" far outweigh the people who actually make the effort to make sure they are doing things right.

I do have to agree with you on this. There really ARE good pet store employees out there, however they are few and far between.

The reptile lady the used to work at my local PetCo was great. She kept snakes herself, and knew a lot about them. Unfortuantely, she quit and the one that works there now tried to insist that I needed to buy a UV lamp for my son's ball python.

Maybe because you listen to good music.

Lenny, I turned on my stereo the other day and found all my Christmas CDs still in the player! :santa: Shows you how often I listen to music... But my TV doesn't seem to bother my snakes anyway, and it's on quite a bit.

Nothing wrong with a little Nate King Cole :santa:
