heat lamps

Are heat lamps ok for a ten gallon tank? I have a new snake and I use a heat lamp that sits on top of the screen. I think it makes it too warm in there cause my corn stays hid all day. Maybe I am just paranoid though. Please comment...:)

Corn snakes, especially hatchlings, love hiding. :) It doesn't mean that the cage is too hot. You should have thermometers to check the cage temperatures, though, to make sure they're in the right range. One side of the cage should be in the mid 70's, and the warm side should be in the mid 80's. Many people prefer to use under tank heaters instead of heat lamps, because heat lamps can have a very drying effect. If the humidity is too low, corn snakes have trouble shedding. So a hygrometer might be in order, as well, if you're going that route.
