Ok, im getting my corn tuesday and im trying to get the warm side up. i bought a flukers dig therm/hydro with no probe and zoo med rheostat. i put the rheo on medium and the thermometer went from 74(room temp) to 76 then back down to 74, i left it for about 6 hrs too! i might have placed the thermometer in the wrong place and it shows it is lower than it really is but im not sure...im trying to get it to 83...any advice? :awcrap:

The Thermometer should be directly above the middle of the UTH, and you really should have gotten one with a probe, but since you didn't. Place it on the Substrate above the MIDDLE of the UTH, which is the HOTTEST spot of the UTH. Try this first and if the temps are not between 80-85 try placing your rheostate to HIGH. And see what readings you get. I'd say you need to get a Therostat, which would be more acurate. I too need to get one because i'm using a Rheostat and it does need to be monitored frequently. I think a lot of the other members will agree with me you should get a probe thermometer, and a Therostat. Hope this helps.

The thermostat/rheostat probe needs to be just under the surface of the substrate, immediately above the heat mat (if that's what you're using).

You need to measure the temperature on the surface of the substrate, immediately above the heat mat.

Is that what you're doing? If so, all I can suggest is that the rheostat needs to be set to a higher temp.

What do you have underneath the tank? I had an open stand for my gecko tank, and couldn't get the temps up past the mid 80's in the winter (they need ~90). So I got some heat reflecting foil tape and covered the stand where the UTH would go. This reflected the heat back up that would normally have been lost. Note if you do something like this, you still need to leave the air gap between UTH and stand. This method got me up close to 100 when I was stuck in the 80's.

ok guys i got the temp perfect i had to move the thermometer..,.and my corn will be here tomorrow from smr...he is a caramel!
