i have uth's for heat and dont really use them because they make the tank bottom way too hot and i dont want to burn the snakes. i plan on getting a thermostat, probably a helix unless anyone knows of a better brand. also ill take any suggestions on the thermostsat you have, but my main thing is for now how do i use the uth without making it too hot for them?

try a layer or two of newspaper between the glass and substrate to prevent direct contact. You can also used ceramic tiles (boiled to remove bacteria) to desperse the heat over a contained area.

You do realize that paper and overheating is the recipe for fire??? Any and all heating element have to be used with a themrostat.. They all will give the warning on the packaging... Johnson Controls is the best tstat for under 90 bucks and will last for ever and grom with your collection.. Dont buffer the heat, control it
