Heating entire rooms?

What are some reasonably priced ways of heating/cooling a single room? There are so many different heating units out there but I keep hearing horror stories about them malfunctioning and even causing house fires. I'm having a hard time finding the right info and would really appreciate the feedback from people with experience or knowledge on this subject.

I use an oil core radiant heater, with a piggy back thermostat setup.
(One t-stat is plugged into the heater, & that t-stat is plugged into another t-stat, which is plugged into the wall.)
In the event that one t-stat fails, the other one acts as a backup.

Edit to add: *ANY* time you use a heat source, you should have a t-stat.
