Heating issue

I have an undertank heater, but the basking area is only 74 degrees F. So either my thermometer isn't working, or the heater isn't doing what it needs to do. I'm going to try to take it back and exchange it for a heat lamp. Should I maybe just use both, or would that be too much heat? What type of lamp should I get?

I did take some of the layers of papertowels off yesterday, and he's been laying on top of his rock cave since then, so now I'm thinking it may be too hot for him on the pad, so I put another layer back on. We'll see what happens. Do you think I need to change to a lamp?

What sort of thermometer are you using? If it's a digital one with a probe, put the probe directly on the glass floor above the heatmat to get an accurate reading. Most unregulated heatmats get way above 74

That's no use whatsoever, I'm afraid. Touch the glass over the mat, if it feels any more than very slightly warm it's most likely too hot. If so, you can raise the tank up off the mat to cool down. Please do so. You really do need an accurate thermometer and a thermostat.

Yes, this is a must. What we are talking about are indoor/door thermometers with a probe. But I wanted a compact which were for sale a the local pet store but you also cqn find something that will work at Walmar, Lowes or any local hardware or garden market. In the list of links from above you'll find a link on how to make your own retrostate for $7 dolors.
this will help you regulate you uth.
good luck.

My hatchlings tank just has a cooking thermometer with a probe which works quite well I got it at walmart for $8
