heating lamp question

right now i have a uth under my tank. The temp of the substrate right on top of the heater is 90. But if the probe is not touching the substrate I only read 80. Should I use a heat lamp also.
What kind of set up do you guys use.

BTW my coolside is only at 70. which is probaly about the same temp as the top half of the tank. which is where my snake is staying curled up on a branch all the time. SHould I worry about him being too cold or will he climb down to the floor if he gets too cold?

your temps sound ideal to me.
my snakes spend more time at the cool end of the viv. where temps regularly get down to 65.
as long as the warm end reaches 80+ on the heat mat so your snake can digest properly dont worry.
Ive never used a heat lamp, or any lighting.
corns are nocturnal, and the bright light can stress out the snake.

hope this info helps...

I wouldn't use a heat lamp. Sounds like the temps are fine. 90 is only a touch warm. The snakes will usually go where they are most comfortable.

heat lamp

what if he never goes down there to where it is 90. He always stays in the tree where it is about 75. I am worried he will stay there because he feels secure even if he is cold.

My amel likes to stay on her cool side most of the time where it ranges around 72-74 degrees. 75 is very good. 90 is a little warm for them. You want the substrate around 86 tops on the warm side. You might want to add a layer of more substrate to keep it cooler. Do you have hides for your snake to go in on both the warm and cool end?

Heat lamp question

THanks for all of your responses.

Meg I have one big fake tree in the middle of the tank. The whole bottom of which is hollow . I measured the temp on the inside of the tree on the substrate towards the hot side. It was only around 80. If he goes to the opposite side of the tree which I admit isn't far away it is cooler. I do not have hides at each extreme end. But for the most part he stays on top of one of the tree limbs towards the warm side. I measured the temp there too and it is 75. I guess he is okay IT's just this is the first one i have ever had and I wanted to make sure I am doing things right.

You might want to place another hide or two in the far ends of the temp extremes. He may still find 80 too warm to stay in for him and not feel comfortable about hanging out in the open in the cooler area.
