Heating my cage

How should I heat my viv? Right now i'm using 2 lights.
1st is a red light for heat, wich i leave on all the time. The 2nd is a blue light to raise the temp just a tid bit and give some light for my snake. So that it can tell the difference between night and day. should I use a heating pad? because it stays right under 79'F.This lamp I turn off between dawn and dusk.or rather when I get up to dusk.

Thanks

Hi there Mots

HI Mots

I'm Mike Boddington from RSA. I have just recently put a heating pad under my viv, which covers about 1/3 of the floor. I leave it on all the time, and I find the temp on that side of the viv is around 80 deg F.
It has helped a lot with digestion for my 2 corns.

Good luck,
Mike

Hi Charcoal, just to let you know, your snake can't see the blue light or the red light. He can only see white light. So your lights are okay as a 24 hour heat source. I use a white light during the day and a red light during the night, and take my word for it, my snake is not stressed by the red light and thinks it's night time. As soon as it goes on and things quiet, out Eden comes to prowl.

I use a red light to heat a 40 gallon tank, and have no problems.

For daytime, I just leave the shades open in the room. Its good because it perfectly shows the coming of spring and fall by the natural photoperiod.

Well as far as redlight is concerned, snakes can see the red light. whether they see it red is another question. They definetly see differences between light and dark so all shadwos that are casted are seen by the snake. Whether it stresses them I might not say.

I heat my tanks with a heat cable which is controlled by a thermo timer. I can input three different temperatures during three different times. additionally I have four lamps (two crystal suns for the morning and two sunspots for the afternoon) that bring up the tempratures during the day. This is especially good when having other species of snakes such as pythons as they need a higher temp in places (up to 34dgrees celcius i think thats around the mid 90s in fahrenheit).

There is also the alternative of using heat lamps that do not radiate light at all. But they definetly have to be protected otherwise the snake can severly burn itself. I personally like the cables best because they do not have to be replaced often. their lifespan is a couple of years.

Hope that helped

Acradon...I'd like to learn more about that lighting you're referring to. I will be housing my snake in a room that receives lots of ambient, indirect sunlight. The photoperiod should be wonderful, but it's an air conditioned room, so heat will be to be provided. Can you tell me more about where you bought the lamps and how much they ran you? How you have them setup, etc?

Well the set up is easy. Straight down. Of course secured with a mesh. The cost is minimal. I think I got them for 6€ each or even less. thats about 7-8$. They are 60W each so not more than a normal houselamp. The only difference is in the light spectra. I think the companys name is Namiba Terra and the bulbs are called Sun Spot and Crystal sun. The Crystal sun appearantly resembles morning light. Whether the correct wavelength is really immitted I don't know but it looks fantastic and I could not find any negative thing about them yet. I only run my viv on them since January so I can't make any statements about lifetime (Still all ok). I would put a link in here but the only one I know is in german. Let me know if you have any more questions.
