Heating pad too hot?

I just got a 10-20gal under tank heater for my 20L tank. But I'm having issues with it. My thermometer is saying that it's over 95 degrees right over it. Isnt that too hot for a corn? I tried putting the heating pad on the side of the tank too, and then it wasnt hot enough. I'm just kind of fed up with it, to be honest. Has anyone had any luck with heating with lights? I was thinking maybe doing one of those dual dome lights, and put them on timers, and have a blue bulb on for 2-3 hours a day, and a red the rest of the time for heat. Any suggestions? I have a baby corn as well, that's in a little plastic box from Walmart, it's about twice as big as a shoebox, and it's currently got a 5-10gal mini UTH on it. And it's not doing a dang thing either. I've got a probe right over it and it's only getting the temp up to 78 degrees at the max. Any suggestions for that too? Thanks all! I really appreciate it!

Yes a heat pad by itself is going to be way to hot. You need someway to regulated it. Either with a thermostat or rheostat. You can even get cheaper dimmer switches at home depot that do the same thing as a rheostat. Until you are able to get something to regulate the temps, you are better to have no heat at all because sometimes those heat mats can get much hotter than that.

Here's a great way to make a rheostat for less than $7. I have built 3 and am going to be building a 4th tomorrow, and they all work great.

wow, goodness, that is a good idea! I think I will probably wait till my other half gets home from China in a few weeks to try that though. Our wiring here is horrible, and I'm a little worried about doing something wrong and burning the apartment building down haha. I am going to bookmark it though, so thank you! :)

You're welcome! If you do go with that, you'll have to adjust it a little a couple times a day. The temps don't flucuate too much though.

Ya, I'm gonna get my guy to make me one when he gets back :) I moved the thermometer probe down lower, and got a huge shock and scare when the UTH read just over 100 degrees! Soooo glad that my guy likes to hang out on the cool side in his moist little cave! I just turned the thing off completely and right now am heating the tank with a lamp with a 50 watt red bulb during the day. Makes under the aspen about 80 degrees usually. That seems to be working so I'm just not going to touch anything till Mr. Brains in the family gets back in a week haha. Thanks for all of your help!
