Heating Question

Feanturi

Go USARK!
I'm building a cage for an adult Coral, and am wanting some input on how I plan on heating it. I am thinking of using a UTH sandwiched between 2 tiles and siliconed together, run off a dimmer switch. I'll use a probe thermometer on the tile to keep accurate temps. Any nay's? Caveats? Nien, VERBOTEN!'s?

Thanks for the op/ed's.....

Your making a viv/box from wood/ply, right?
I can understand your sandwiched theory. I would recommend using a thermostat over a dimmer tho.

No wood here...

I am doing a styrofoam/foam/grout box. I plan on recessing the tile to sub-substrate level, with the wire running out through the wall. I may also do the same in a tv stand I am working on as well. I will include pics soon.

Yeah,, picture would help for I am now lost in the idea. Sounds like it will turn out with a jungle style viv.
Are you going to upgrade the "dimmer" to control the heat.

Nice Viv

I like the design. Are the inside walls melamine, or just painted white and sealed? Here's the pics, would have had them up yesterday but the storm was playing havoc with us out here.

Mine is painted and sealed 3/4" plywood.
That's a foam ..."box" how do you plan on securing a hinge opening be it glass on hatch.
Dose that burn easily??

Haven't decided

on melamine or fiberglass outside>with painted/sealed grout-polyurethane inside. The door will be held on with hinges on the side and the door will come completely off for opening/cleaning. The styrofoam will be completely covered inside and out.

Ohhhh ok! Lol...forgive me! I thought you were straight up building it out of the foam! So the foam will really be the "core"...right?
That is actually kind of genius, I'm sure with that insulation it will take less energy to keep the right temps.

Well, thanks for the genius bit, wish the idea was mine. We are looking for ways to cut expenses, so I figured we could save a good bit on more efficient cages. After reading around on the DIY and seeing what a few of the more inspired folks (thanks to (in no particular order) v_various, ReptiHabitat, TripleMoonsExotic, Mr. Maya, and Spurticus, among others for great posts and ideas) I figured something could be done here. When finished it will be heated, cooled and lit with no further costs! Gotta love the new technology available these days. Of course the investment will be around $200 for the first cage, $100 thereafter, but it will work out in the long run.
