heating tanks

Ok a 10 gallon can you heat that with just a UTH? WOuld keep the temp ok? I am having trouble fitting the tanks and lights on the shelf and have 2 more snakes coming tomarrow.
Thanks

You could use 3" flex watt hooked to a dimmer switch to adjust uth temps. You can get it in various lenghts. It works very well if your tanks are side by side, you can heat an entire row with one heat tape.

How much?

How much of the cage should be heated with Flexwatt in order to have half the cage warm and a cool spot on the other. Should I just cover half the tank like the uth? I have a Thermostat with Night Drop that should be here on Monday so I want to be able to set it up right. My UTH is just not getting the job done and I have a red light for night use that I plan to keep on the system.

1/3 to no more than 1/2 half of the tank should be covered underneath by the UTH. I use Zoomed mini size under one side of all of my snake 10 gallons. (The small size is too big IMHO.) They're the easiest to deal with, and the corn's like the belly heat. Try putting a piece of paper, or a tile, over the glass where the UTH is, and under the substrate so if the corn burrows, it won't get burned.

What are you using to measure your temps? A UTH under a 10 gallon should keep it plenty warm. I have one hatchling in a 10 gal with the smallest size heat mat and have to keep a dimmer on or it will get way too hot. So yours should be getting the job done. I'd suspect the thermometer first.

Thermometers?

I've used 2 thermometers with almost equal results. She's in a fully finished garage. My wife has a day care in the home and not all parents are as tolerant and understanding about snakes. I bring her cage in when it is cold, like when the temp is going to be below 60 in the garage. I have a thermometer that constantly gives me a readout of the garage temp in my living room.

Even on a warm day the uth just doesn't cut it. I ordered the flexwatt and maybe that will be better. Does it have to be cut in 1 foot increments or can I cut it at 15" to cover half the bottom of a 20L?
