Heating / temps for rats

DrGraeme

I have just started a small rat colony and I'm trying to decide where the best place is to keep them.
What kind of heating or temp ranges should they be exposed to? I don't have an outside shed or anything like that, Would they be ok on an enclosed veranda (not exposed completely to the elements but not inside either) or should they be indoors.
At the moment they are indoors but I worried that they might start stinking the place.

Any suggestions?

I keep my rats outside under a canopy. I have lost some due to high heat but that is only when they are over 100. Rats adapt well to there enviorment but if it gets really hit ir really cold then inside is a good option.

I disagree with keeping them outside Imo. They can catch all kinds of stuff being outdoors. We keep ours indoors where the temps are about 75 degrees and we get litters like there is no tomorrow. Being outdoors they can get fleas, mites, Anything could get in the racks such as coon, snakes and eat all your litters

I keep my rats indoors. I admit I LOVE them! I have 5 male and 5 female pet rats. They are sex separated in luxury condos with occasional visits when I need to restock the freezer! Mine are kept in a room that is a wee bit warm but they seem fine with it. I would worry about temperature more if you are keeping them in plastic bins. The moisture from condensation would not be good for them. Unless you have a whole whole bunch I don't find smell an issue with rats like it is with mice.
