heating

The ideal temperature range is 82-86 degrees F (27-30C), never higher than 90F (32C) Your body temp is around 98.6F (37C) so unless your hands are really cold the heat mat will actually feel cool to barely warm to the touch.

A thermostat will keep it from getting to hot and a digital thermometer will let you know what the temp is at a glance.

hey guys. back again. been almost 4 years since i sold my snake but bough another one yesterday. was just wondering about the heat mat that came with the tank. the person i bough it off didnt use a thermostat. they just got it stuck to the bottom of the tank on outside. and was just wondering is it ok for me to do the same until i get a thermostat? gonna order one online. they had the snake in his tank for 2 years like it but i dont want to do any further damage if its causing any damage.

Anytime you have a heat source (UTH, ceramic heat lamp, ambient room heater, etc) you need to regulate it with either a thermostat, which controls the temps for you, or a rheostat, that you have to adjust the dial.
Personally, I prefer the thermostat method. I have a backup thermostat for my main thermo stat.
There are a number of people that have lost all/almost all of their collections because of a heating mishap.

Heather gave you excellent advice, it's never safe to use any un-regulated heat source.

You can try one of these, they are excellent.
