Hiya,

Just signed up as this seems like a great site...

I'm planning to get a corn snake very soon... It'll probably be a Black Anethrystic Corn.... Is there anything I should know about before I buy? He fed 2 days ago in the shop and I handled him in the shop last week (he's calm and alert)... He's 2 months old.

I have a glass tank that's was bought for a gecko... it's an upright container, so will only last the corn a short while... I have a heat lamp, heat mat, wood chippings (esp for snakes.. from the shop), and also a little bath.... Is there anything else I should go for?

I'm a big n00b at this and am kinda nervous about mucking it up, so any help would be appreciated.

you probably won't need the lamp, a mat with thermostat should be just the ticket! Also a digital thermometer with probe (Maplins sell them for @£18) will help you keep the conditions right. You can get all sorts of fancy hides but loo-roll tubes cut in half are really good for hatchlings, they like smaller spaces and plenty of hides to feel secure.

Thanks... I'll try the 1/2 loo roll and see how it goes...

We have maplins in ireland so I'll check out the digital thermometer with probe... is that like a pen you point at something and it tells you the temperature of that part? How do you use it?

I'm not sure the right temps yet, but I'll keep reading the rest of here and find out... also the guy in the shop is really helpful...

This is the closest I could find to how mine looks. You couldn't go wrong getting the corn snake manual by Kathy Love before you get your snake, also the f a q's on here will be a great start

The probe is the little wire that's sticking out, you use it to measure the temperature on the bottom of the viv, under the substrate (chippings)

Thanks... I'll have to see if I can get the digital thermometer with probe.... so i measure the very bottom of the tank.. under the substrate where the snake will snuggle? ok...

I've never had a snake before, but I have a few friends at work who have had snakes for a while... they will help me.

Thanks for the welcome DAND :)

Where can I get this? I won't be able to get it before I get the snake, cos I'm getting the snake in about 3-4 hours :O

After looking at the cover, I think I've seen it in town, so I'll take a look for it :)

I'll try and get a photo of my snake when I get him/her...

Now.. for a name? *thinks*
