Hi,

We are the new owners of a hypo striped female corn - Moxie. She is so sweet, I am so glad we seem to have picked a winner. We have three boys aged 5, 3, and 2 - so the snake is their Christmas present (and also mine). They try to be as gentle as possible with the snake but even with their fast motions she never seems to get fazed. The only time she raises a fuss is when we put her back in her cage - she wriggles around and tries to grab on to the lip. We fed her once already. The guy at the pet store (one that specializes in reptiles, not a chain) gave us 6 mice (or maybe baby rats, they are pretty big) to feed her. She got it almost all the way down (to the hind legs) then spit it out. I thought it might be because 3 kids were watching her through the box, so I covered it with a towel and peeked in. She did the same thing, but quit a little earlier. So we went to the store and got some smaller mice and tried again the next day. This time she ate like a champ. I was kind of hoping for a strike and coil type thing, but she just kind of felt it with her mouth, then moved over to the head and started swallowing. I guess that's the price you pay for a super docile snake!

Sorry, having trouble uploading the second picture. When we put Moxie back in her viv she explores around awhile, but then goes into her plywood hide or more often just tunnels under the aspen. I think her other hide is too big. I figured she would hang out on her rock/plywood basking spot but she hasn't yet - she's just there in the picture because that's where we put her. My son drew a picture of an attacking hawk which we taped to the outside of her tank to keep her alert  Luckily, the picture isn't too realistic!

Hi :wavey: Welcome to the forum! I am from just up the road in Bowling Green, KY.

Moxie is a gorgeous girl! Don't worry about her not striking and coiling, just be happy that she eats.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There are lots of helpful people here.

Beautiful snake, she looks like she is a year old at least. Do you have a weight, she could be eating hoppers or small feeder mice. Also unless your camera doesn't show true color she looks like and amel to me. Your boys will have so much fun with her. susang

Yes, I didn't ask the guy how old she was - I figured around 2 years. I will ask at the store (Aquatic Critters in Nashville fyi) when I return the 5 mice/rats that are too big. They just had a big bag of them and he tried to pick out the smallest ones. Once they were defrosted, they looked about 1.5 times her biggest diameter, but just barely. I ran out to PetSmart and got some "medium mice", brand name Artic Mice.

I know I am going against all the experts here as I only have the ceramic heater above and no UTH. A man down the street has a menagerie in his basement - 4 iguanas, some tarantulas, and 8 or so various snakes and lizards - no corns but milksnakes and kingsnakes. His son is a herpatologist at the St. Louis zoo. He gave me the tank and recommended using a heat lamp - he said he had a UTH malfunction once and killed a snake. Moxie seems to like it OK - she stayed on the cool side for 5 days until we fed her, since then she had been more towards the warm side.

Amel or Hypo

I think she is a hypo - her eyes are black - just red eye from the flash. Although she has no black on her belly or anywhere else besides her tongue. The other colors in the picture are pretty true to life. I like the color of a amel but I don't like the red eyes - they have that demon possessed look to me (no offense to Amel lovers out there :) )
