Hi all, been lurking and researching a bunch and thought it was finally time to delurk.:wavey:

I've been intrigued by reptiles for a very long time and recently decided it's time. My research brought me to corns, although there was this very attractive California King that had me teetering a bit. When I went back for another look I was told it regurgitate it's last meal so it was no longer for sale.

Anyway, I ended up purchasing my first snake last Thursday, a normal corn which has not yet been named. I'm pretty excited about my new companion and can't wait to handle the little beastie. He came home in blue and has been staying out of site for the most part, but I did snag a couple of pictures before he disappeared.

My setup includes a 29 long, uth on a dimmer monitored with a digital thermometer (probe taped on the glass above the pad). I went with Aspen shavings because I wasn't sure which brand of paper towels were not bleached. I also have 3 hides spread around and a water dish. The hide used most resembles Hometree in Avatar.

In my searching, I've been to about 5 different pet stores (some repeatedly) asking questions and never seem to hear the same answer regarding needs of snakes, it's a little surprising really. Even talking to different people in the same place nets different results.:nope: A person could easily be misinformed in both a smaller place or a large chain. The plus side to repeated visits did show a couple of people that appeared to know their stuff, which is essentially the same advice given here.

I do have a question about feeding. How big of a bin / box should I use?

Hello and welcome to the forum! :wavey: It's nice to see someone else from the granite state! That's a pretty looking snake you got there. Would be nice to see a few pics after she finishes shedding.

Even here, your going to get varying methods to husbandry. Most are very similar with slight differences. As long as you meet their basic needs, you should be fine.

As far as a feeding bin, keep it small. Especially if it's a baby. They like nice tight spaces. I use glad tupperware that I cover with a towel for darkness.

Welcome to the forum. The answer you received mirrors my answer as well. You were given excellent advice. I started with a smaller feeding bin to help the little guys feel secure. They do not need that much room to be able to eat and I have found if they are a little stressed and in a bin too big they will go to the other side and practically mush themselves into that side the farthest away from the prey as possible. You want less space than that LOL.

Hi there and welcome to the forum! Beautiful little snakie you got there. Glad you found this site and your asking questions already. just a tip, make sure the humidity is up in the viv while the snake is in shed, and pay close attention when you find the shed to make sure both eye cap scales were shed and that the tip of the tail came off. As per your question about feeding bins. I use clear sterelite shoe box containers with locking lids for my babies, when they get bigger I bump them up to a bigger container. Here's a pic of most of mine during their feeding time :D the tower of snakes!

Hey..Just want to say a quick Hi and nice looking normal you have..very little black borders it has . Brownish!! cool.

Thanks for the responses.

Woke up to find the shed happened last night. Looks like the eye caps and tail are there, but I'm not sure about the very tip (see photo). He / she was also hanging out in the tree all day instead of under it.

The little guy was active tonight, so it seemed like a good time for feeding. I was told 2 pinkies or 1 fuzzy, the fuzzies seemed way to big. Attempting to put him in another container wasn't working, so he went back in the terrarium and promptly hid in a piece of bamboo. I decided to show him a pinkie while he was in the bamboo. In under a minute the pinkie was nearly gone. I added the second pinkie shortly after and left the darkened room. A few minutes later there was an empty platter. I left everything darkened and quiet for a while before I cleaned the dishes.

I wasn't able to get any good pictures post shed. The lighting stinks after dark. Is it safe to use a flash? He was partially hidden too.
Will try to get better pictures in a few days unless I catch him in the open sooner.

Well, decided to stick with Beastie for a name. Had the little guy out for a feeding and decided to get some current pics.

The last one shows him clinging to my sweatshirt while eating a pinkie....I gave up on trying to get him in a bowl:shrugs:
