Hello from North Dakota!

My name is Ruth. I got my very first snake just a couple weeks ago and I already want more! Her name is Lily and she is a lavender corn snake. She is still pretty little, about 15 inches and she is getting more and more active every day.

Since she is my first snake, I am a little nervous about doing something wrong. So if anyone has some advice, I am all ears! Well, technically I'm all eyes...

Firstly, I have no idea how to tell the gender... My gut tells me it's a female. But I will just call it Phily is it's male:)

IF you picked it up in Fargo, your gut may be wrong . . . :sidestep:

Welcome to the forum. Great to find another North Dakotan here. I'd recommend Kathy Love's book first and foremost as it covers a lot of what you need to know for care.

Welcome to the Forum, Ruth. There are 2 ways you can find out if your corn is male or female. But I suggest you have it done by someone experienced. I'm not so experienced either, so I'll let someone ealse explain thoes procesess to you.
If you can, post a picture of your snake! Dont be afraid to ask any questions. :D

I did get it in Fargo, at Pets R Inn. The employee who helped me said that when they received the snakes, they were too young to tell the gender... I got so used to calling her Baby Lily... It did come from Dakota Corns, though, about which I have heard nothing but good things!

Thank you for the kind words. I'm pretty certain you will need to call him Philly. :)

I just checked your website and the photo you have of the lavender under the "expected 2010 hatchlings" and thats my little baby!!

welcome Ruth. glad to see another North Dakotan on here. pay attention to what is said when it comes to advice, even when it isn't stuff u want to pay attention to, and ultimately do what u need to do for the best interest of your lovely new snake as well as your comfort with him/her. unless you wanna breed him or her gender don't matter a hill of beans, really. in general, i'll bet most of the corn snakes (maybe all) that you find at pet stores in ND were most likely bred by our own Mr. Do'urden there. So, if he's saying he sold a male lavender there it is likely he has an idea of what he's saying? or does he?

Oooh I like that name Jasper. I struggle coming up with names for my snakes, I mean really really struggle. Anyway welcome to the forum and congrats on your new snake, pretty cool that he came from a very reputable breeder on top of that.
