Hello from upstate NY!

meowmacita

save the big kitties
Hi everyone!
My name is Jess, I am from upstate NY (hometown is Saratoga, live in Syracuse). I am in the process of getting my first corn snake, which will be my first pet reptile. I love this forum, and have been reading it for many months trying to educate myself before I actually get my snake. Everyone is so knowledgeable and nice! I have most of my set up complete, and will have it up and running before I get the snake, which is something I read to do on these forums :)

My set up is currently this:
--Ziploc Weathertight 27qt tub, with tons of air holes (it was the best escape-proof option I could find at Walmart, seriously no gaps anywhere)
--Aspen bedding
--One digital thermometer with probe to double check UTH/thermostat
--One digital thermometer/hygrometer with probe to check cool side
--ZooMed reptitherm UTH, medium (to be applied to a ceramic tile, for ease of moving to the snake's bigger home when the time comes, planning on propping the plastic bin up with the little feet, then putting the tile between the plastic and the UTH, I think?)
--Hydrofarm thermostat (had ordered the Zilla Temp Controllers and didn't like the reviews I found out afterwards about it malfunctioning, so I sent it back)
--Exoterra fake plants
--ZooMed terrarium moss for a moist hide, to be put inside a hollow, soccer-ball pattern rubber dog toy (an idea on one of the DIY threads!)
--10 inch tongs for feeding
--paper towel tube and plastic container hides

I am a little curious about the ceramic tile and how that will work, I guess I will need a way to hold the UTH/tile up off the table, to give it a little breathing room, and so the tile is against the bottom of the plastic tub.

I've also seen some homemade reptile hammocks and wanted to know what people thought of using Command hooks to hang them instead of using suction cups. I know you would have to be careful about any exposed adhesive because the snake could get stuck to it.

Also, I have seen on a couple websites like petDIYs.com that you can put tight strings across the viv to give them a higher up level to explore. I think it's a neat idea, one of the pictures I saw has a paper towel tube threaded by one of those strings, so it's basically a swinging hide. Are there any concerns about the strings, besides maybe the snake falling if the string were to come loose?

I am really excited about owning my first snake, maybe that shows haha. I decided to save up my money and wait for an orchid morph. Something about their colors says "non-scary" to me, plus they are just so beautiful! I have a little bit of convincing to do with my family and friends that snakes are cool and I'm not "weird". Hopefully I'd get one with a nice calm temperament and maybe I'd let the kids around my apartment complex learn from it too!! Oh, and it's name is going to be Squishy :) Any and all advice is appreciated!

It sounds great! I think you have covered the bases. Do you have pics? As for the heating tile, I like to wrap mine in a sheet of foil so when I do dismantle the setup for cleaning it isn't stuck to anything. You can use a bead of silicone around the tile to seal it up.

Now we need to know what you plan on getting! There are so many great breeders on this forum, figure out what appeals to you and we can direct you to the breeders who specialize in them.

Congrats, and welcome!

Pics are coming soon!

I am just looking for an orchid morph, either gender. I'm not interested in breeding, this will just be a pet/outreach animal. I think I'd like to try a hatchling or a snake less than a year old. I am going to a reptile Expo in Binghamton NY in a few weeks and I'm hoping to find one there!(~reptile expos will be new to me too!)

meow be careful at the expos... You will have people that will over charge/under charge/have great animals and bad animals.. one of my babies I got from there had retained tail tip shed so she lost the tail tip.. Got two awesome pet snakes that was discarded breeder projects (and thinner) and a couple of fancy lavenders for next to nothing that was awesomely bred and cared for.. so double check and make sure you can spot an orchid, someone tried to tell me they had opals but called them pearls because of some name thingie (that the people here called them out on).. I am going to my next expo in 10 days here on LI it's supposed to be huge!!

Also welcome to the forum and do consider buying from the breeders here, they have amazing animals and I mean AMAZING!!!!!!! yes you pay for shipping but you will know their lineage I dont know how long back in some of these cases!

Thanks for the warning. I also have a couple local breeders near me who might have orchids in the near future, so I may hold off on purchasing a snake at the expo. I might just look around and stock up on feeders there.
I just got the new thermostat today, so set up pictures are coming soon!
