save the big kitties
Hi everyone!
My name is Jess, I am from upstate NY (hometown is Saratoga, live in Syracuse). I am in the process of getting my first corn snake, which will be my first pet reptile. I love this forum, and have been reading it for many months trying to educate myself before I actually get my snake. Everyone is so knowledgeable and nice! I have most of my set up complete, and will have it up and running before I get the snake, which is something I read to do on these forums
My set up is currently this:
--Ziploc Weathertight 27qt tub, with tons of air holes (it was the best escape-proof option I could find at Walmart, seriously no gaps anywhere)
--Aspen bedding
--One digital thermometer with probe to double check UTH/thermostat
--One digital thermometer/hygrometer with probe to check cool side
--ZooMed reptitherm UTH, medium (to be applied to a ceramic tile, for ease of moving to the snake's bigger home when the time comes, planning on propping the plastic bin up with the little feet, then putting the tile between the plastic and the UTH, I think?)
--Hydrofarm thermostat (had ordered the Zilla Temp Controllers and didn't like the reviews I found out afterwards about it malfunctioning, so I sent it back)
--Exoterra fake plants
--ZooMed terrarium moss for a moist hide, to be put inside a hollow, soccer-ball pattern rubber dog toy (an idea on one of the DIY threads!)
--10 inch tongs for feeding
--paper towel tube and plastic container hides
I am a little curious about the ceramic tile and how that will work, I guess I will need a way to hold the UTH/tile up off the table, to give it a little breathing room, and so the tile is against the bottom of the plastic tub.
I've also seen some homemade reptile hammocks and wanted to know what people thought of using Command hooks to hang them instead of using suction cups. I know you would have to be careful about any exposed adhesive because the snake could get stuck to it.
Also, I have seen on a couple websites like petDIYs.com that you can put tight strings across the viv to give them a higher up level to explore. I think it's a neat idea, one of the pictures I saw has a paper towel tube threaded by one of those strings, so it's basically a swinging hide. Are there any concerns about the strings, besides maybe the snake falling if the string were to come loose?
I am really excited about owning my first snake, maybe that shows haha. I decided to save up my money and wait for an orchid morph. Something about their colors says "non-scary" to me, plus they are just so beautiful! I have a little bit of convincing to do with my family and friends that snakes are cool and I'm not "weird". Hopefully I'd get one with a nice calm temperament and maybe I'd let the kids around my apartment complex learn from it too!! Oh, and it's name is going to be Squishy Any and all advice is appreciated!
