Hello. I am Razzy.

Razzy
My name is Jeimi (Jamie). I am 27, a woman, and I live in Waterford, Michigan.
I wanted tyo take this opportunity to introduce myself here on this forum, as I have just signed up, and became a new member.

In November of 2008, I purchased a snake from my lps. I paid roughly about $30 for it. The snake that I purchased was labeled as a Leucistic(sp) Texas Rat Snake. Upon further research, and investigation, it seems to me that this does not look like a rat snake. I understand that rat snakes belong to the corn snake family, but I have also not found any corn snakes that look like the snake that I have.

I have posted a couple of pictures here so that maybe I can get some help to identify this snake that I have. I have found pictures that look similar but nothing exact.

I am sorry that the pictures are not really that great. I have an older camera, so I make due with what I have. I apologize in advance for this.

Anyways, I do know for sure its a female. I have probed it, and the probe only went down the width of her body, and then I popped her to be double sure. When I purchased her, the guy at the store said that she was about 9 months old at that time, and that they are snakes that he raises and sells in his store. That would make her about a year and a half old now. She (Lucy) is about 2 ft long. I dont know how much she weighs because I have never weighed her.

She has really bright brownish/orange eyes, and her tongue is black with bright orange sides. her coloring is dark brown, and black, with a little red/orange and white in between the scales. her belly looks like she is a corn snake..with the typical corn snake markings, which is how they get their name, I understand.

I am just looking for a proper identification of her. Her tank that she is in is a 20g tank with 2 over head lamps..one for daytime, and one for night time. She is feeding atleast once a week on baby pinkies, and small fuzzies. She has a watering/soaking bowl that I change on a daily basis, and she has a place where she can hide. The tank is cool on one end..being in between 72, and 78, and the warmer side where the under tank heat pad is, stays in between 76 and 82.

I have tried a couple of different substrates in her tank..ie..sand, rocks, gravel, and even shredded newspaper, but she seems to absolutely love the ground up coconut bark because she can burrow in it. Lucy loves to burrow, and play in the stuff all day long, and will spend hours crawling through it, then washing herself off in her bowl.

She loves to climb, and is an excellent escape artist, as she has already gotten out of her cage once, and it took me 4 days to find her...lol..
I have since then fixed her cage where she cannot get out, and hasn't been able to since.

I handle her atleast 2 to 3 times per week, and she loves to just coil herself up around my wrist.

Anywho, thank you everyone for reading this post, and listening to my introduction. Any information in helping me properly identifying her would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
;)Razzy, and Lucy

Hello Jeimi, welcome!
I guess you know your snake is not leucistic because she has pigment. She does look like a Texas Rat snake.

Pretty snake! I am not the expert on all the many kinds of rats, because they are all so similar, but that is quite definitely a rat snake! And she's very beautiful!

Thank you for the replies! And also, thank you everyone for confirming that this is in fact a rat snake that I have here. I have recently taken some new pictures of her in her tank with the white calcisand that I purchased for her. I went with this because I have read in other threads that this is a good substrate to keep them in because it will not harm Lucy if she accidentally ingests it for any reason, or cause any blockage. I also read that it holds heat pretty well, which I know Lucy will appreciate.

I shall get the new pictures posted a.s.a.p.

Lucy eating a Fuzzy

She loves those mice! lol.

Okay I am done with pictures. I know they take up bandwidth.

Since rat snakes are in the corn snake family, I am still good to go, correct?

Thanks Wayne. Yeah I was scared to take the picture of her while feeding. She is such a finikey eater, that I thought she would regurgitate(sp) so i took it with no flash! Thank goodness for no blur!!
