I am really interested in getting a corn snake, and reading the posts of the great people on this forum has only solidified my resolve!

I have set up a tank according the the posts I could find, the temperatures are right, the substrate is good, the hides are in place as is the water...I think I am ready to go.

I just have two questions before I take the plunge:

1. Is there any odor associated with a clean, well-maintained corn snake or their home? I am pretty sensitive, hence my choice of a hypoallergenic pet :)

2. Is there any discernable health/temperment difference in the beautiful color morphs as opposed to the "normal" corns? I know each snake is an individual, but in general?

After hours of research and thought, I think I am most insterested in a "bubblegum snow" type!

Thank you in advance for your time.

Hello, congrats on the choice of snake and welcome to the forums. :)

In answer to your questions:

1. No, not really. Perhaps a faint whiff (nothing thats likely to turn your stomach though) after an adult has done a large poo but if you scoop 'em as you find 'em it won't last. Oh, and a regurge stinks but thats a rarity.

2. Not that I've ever noticed. Seems to be entirely down to the individual.

Be sure and post up pics when you get him/her.

Snows are nice. My first corn was a snow .... she's 13 now. :)

I would think that the substrate would trigger allergies far more easily than a snake. They are nearly odor free, don't groom themselves to leave the proteins like cats and dogs do, so it should be ideal. If the substrate does bother you, you can always use paper towel in there. That should take care of any problems. I also have not noticed any difference in my corns as far as a particular morph being better than another, as a matter of fact, I have very different personalities among my normals. Some are mellow, others aren't. If you have a chance to see the snake in person and handle it, try to pick one that is more mellow to begin with. I've found that the one's that aren't trying to escape constantly, aren't jumpy and generally just hang out, turn out to be the best ones. I would even hazard a statement as to if you had a choice between the bubblegum of your dreams that acted really nervous and a nice corn of another morph that liked to just sit in your hand, I'd go with the one that sits. I think you'll enjoy handling them much more, they seem to be easier to get to feed and overall just do better. My amel was very much like that, and he's still the mellowest and best feeder of all my snakes, bar none. He is also the biggest of my collection at over 4 ft.
