Help! He's out of the tank!

Lavbino368

I have herps!
Hey everyone.. I have a case of the Harry Houdini snake... I have the reptile tanks with the "sliding door" top, for lack of better verbage, and lack of their real title.. My husband and I took out a good shed on Tuesday. I took my shnaker out on Wednesday, but saw him sitting on his plants later Wednesday after I put him back. The tank was definitely closed, because I won't leave the room without wiggling it to see if I can unsnap it. Well, it's Thursday and Hubby and I noticed my other snake is all out and about, having a nice soak or sitting on the wood. I thought it would be a nice evening to take Voldemort out, and he is GONE! He's no where to be found. I removed everything from my computer room (they are closed in here, ALWAYS, with ventilation and whatnot) and took out all of his hides and he is NOWHERE! Has anyone lost and found a snake before? What kind of places should I be looking? We checked empty boxes, full boxes, inside the couch, the computers, the printer, the radiator case, under the carpets, all over! And there is no sign of him. Like I said he just shed, so it's not even like I could track him by anything b/c he pooped also in the past couple of days and it was a perfect shed. I'm freaking out over my little lost Lavy... Please help! Any advice would be amazingly appreciated!:confused::confused:

I have already had 3 escapes. Flour around the edges of the floor may reveal where he is slithering at night. Traps made out of soda bottles may capture him. There are more hints here on cs.com somewhere -- try the search feature.

One of mine was found 3 feet away in a backpack, the other two were found over 24 hours later, a room away from where they escaped and 3-5 feet off the ground on bookshelves. So hang in there & good luck!

Thank you so much!! I will deff try the flour.. I didn't even think to use the search because I'm just freaking out! I feel like he's somewhere suffering and it's all my fault!!

I just recently found one of our escapees. Snakes like to slither along where the floor meets the wall so I went around the room searching every possible location. Dont forget to check on the desks. That is where we found ours. Also close the door to the computer room and stick your fingers under the door to see if it is big enough for the snake to crawl out under. Keep in mind they can strech themselves out pretty thin if needed.

Def couldn't have gotten out of the room.. into the closet, absolutely! but not out... I'm going to try making a bottle trap tonight or tomorrow night. He ate not too long ago, so I know I shouldn't worry about him starving and whatnot... Oye! I hope this never happens again!!!

I lost a baby, what, about a week and a half ago? Anyway, she was gone four days, then we found her in the same place we'd already looked half a dozen times before. On the floor, between the baseboard and the floor, in a 1/2" space left from when we removed a wall-to-wall carpet. She was about 6 inches from her tank, and about 5' vertically down from it (it's on a shelf about 5' off the floor). She'd even managed to catch and eat a large, wild mouse WAY too big for her! No worse for wear, she digested in her home for a couple of days, and is now back to her usual hijinx, with a much more secure top to make sure she keeps her adventures to the interior of her home :).

Someone else on here had a snake go on a slither about and her mom found her four months later in the backyard :p don't give up hope. Masking tape (painters tape, not too sticky) makes a good trap for small snakes too.

Well he's definitely small.. I laid out some flour, have been watching but no luck so far... I almost wonder if he slithered down the pole for the heater into the basement.. That will be my next endeavor for the weekend... I'm going to buy some extra fuzzies and try to entice him (and use them in the trap(s)). I really appreciate all the help everyone! I will keep you updated on the situation..

Be sure to put a few water sources out so he does not dehydrate. Masking tape should work the best. Good luck.

Wow that's a good idea.. Well I had a trap set up all night, it doesn't look like anything disturbed it... Nothing disturbed the flour either.. I think he may have fit into the small gap between the radiator pipe and the floorboard, which means he is in mine or my neighbor's basement. I set up another bottle "trap" down there, and I'm going to put tape around the house in spots where he'll be safe if he sits there for an hour or so... If I'm not upset enough about this whole situation, my Amel passed away last night and I have no idea why! He was only about 5-6 months old.. Maybe I wasn't cut out for this! =[ I do appreciate all the help and ideas though... I will still update when Voldy comes back

I have the slide on lids too. My snakes are in critter cages and they have little holes on the front you can put a lock on it you want. With the lock in place they can not budge the lid unless they are strong enough to break the plastic holding the lid. So if you find your snake and your lid has a place for a lock I would suggest using one.

Look UNDER the tank. We had on hide there. We wer cleaning out the tank, and saw him through the glass bottom.

The lid was locked? Do you have any hollow hides??

I'm with you, after hearing everyone the one thing that was left out is that he is still in the tank. At one point when I had 40-50 critter cages with the lockable lid I had never had an escape (except for one time i FORGOT to close the lid). Check everywhere in the tank, I have seen them so far back up into hollow hides had to look several times to find it.
Good luck
John

Huh? Who you talkin to and what you mean?
This is the tank I use:

The lid slides in places and snaps shut in the back. Then so the snake cant push it back open you can put a lock on the front. My tank has 3 hides a big water dish and lots of vines and branches to climb on. It has a UTH and a lamp for winter time.

I'm not the one with the lost snake just so ya know. I was just thinking maybe they had the same sort of lid mine has and I suggested locking it since their snake pushed theirs back open.

As for the person with the lost snake I say look everywhere they can fit places you wouldn't think they could get into.

That's the same tank we have... He didn't push it back open.. My husband was taking care of the shed and I was standing there watching the tank... I walked away when my husband came back in the room so between the time it took me to turn around and the time it took my husband to get to the tank (a foot and a half?) He high-tailed it out of the tank. We didn't realize until 2 days later. I've looked everywhere I possibly can, and set up numerous traps.. but he's small and there are a ton of nooks and crannies in the basement that I can't get to... I didn't catch so much as a dust bunny so I am assuming he is in the basement and not interested in my traps, or outside of the house. He still hasn't turned up, but neither has his body, so I am still optimistic. And I have water bowls all over in case he is still inside! Thanks for all the help and suggestions.. =\

What substrate are you using? I have less than an inch of cocoa fiber, and a few days after I got my snake, she was gone. nowhere to be found. Took out all the hides, everything. Gone. I then got the idea to gently rake my hands through the substrate and sure enough, I snagged a snake.

No- I was saying that if you use the viv with the sliding locking lid, and you are positive it clicked shut, then the snake has to be inside the viv. Many fake log/branch hides have "secret passages" that the snake can squeeze into.
