I have had my snakes for about 4 months now and they have been doing really well. I havent changed anything, but all of a sudden a month ago they stopped wanting to eat there f/t mousies. I started feeding live and they were taking those just fine but a week ago they refused and so i tried live again tonight and they are both refusing. They are both really limp feeling, and not moving much at all and neither of them will eat!!! Any suggestions? I have become really attached and dont want to loose either of them. Please help!!!

First: Calm down. :) You don't know what the situation is yet.
Second: Is there anything in the cage that is toxic to them, or have you put something in there, branch, rock, etc that hasn't been washed?
Third: Did you wash your hands before and after handling them?
Fourth: Have you noticed any other behaviour that isn't normal?
Fifth: Are they in "blue"?

::taking deep breaths::

Ok....
I always wash my hands before and after.
I have not added anything to either tank...
They are both sitting in their tanks with their heads raised and the male has his mouth open...
I am really new to snakes and i have never seen this behavior before so i am just trying not to wig out. Thank you for any help you can give. :eek1:

sorry

forgot...
neither appear to be in the blue, but it has been a little longer than normal between sheddings this time...

Odd.

Mouth is open... Could that be a resporatory problem?

Have you checked their breathing at all?
If you hear a wheezing, or a gurgling sound, it might be a breathing problem.

I think it's a bit late for hibernation, I'm honestly not sure on that, but it's a possibility.

Bad News

i was really hoping that this thread was going to turn around and have a good post finally..............sorry for the loss.

This Is A Very Disturbing Thread

I so sorry for your loss. Usually, the forum gets to those in need of help quickly and, in most cases, things turn out all right. For someone to lose two snakes in less than 24 hours is very disturbing. I hope you plan to to have a necropsy done. Especially if your plan is to replace your snakes.

From your description of the events I don't think your snakes died of starvation. There a still a lot of possibilities, e.g., poisoning, temperature fluctuation, disease, etc. Whatever it was, keep us posted so we can all help the next guy.

Thank you all for your concern, I am having a necropsy done on Donut, i took him in today. The vet is a friend of mine and she said she could get me some results by monday or tuesday. I will keep you all posted.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My first thought is some sort of airborne toxin.

Has anyone in your home been using paint, glue, cleaning products etc? Did anyone use deodorant or perfume near them? Is there any work being done outside the building like external painting, creosoting, use of chemical weedkillers or fertilizers? I know this might be unlikely this time of year, but sometimes it can only take a tiny amount of something poisonous enough to do the damage.

Please let us know your vet's results.

I'm very sorry for your loss. :( :(

But, if you don't mind, I would like to figure out what happened to them for learning and safety purposes. Of course it could have just been a disease or something else we wont figure out, but i am wondering what kind of bedding you were using and whether or not you were using store bought viv decorations.

Again I am very sorry.

You never said...what was your setup???? Bedding ,temps. Were they in the same cage. etc etc Can you give us any history on them.??
Sorry about your loss. Tragic.

Hey all

Ok everyone. thank you for the concern that you have all shown. I got off the phone with Andrea (my vet) about an hour ago. She hasnt gotten everything back as far as labs go, but she told me that she was pretty sure that the official c.o.d was going to be mold spore inhalation, which absolutely kills me. For everybody who asked me about my set up, here's what i can tell you.

The bedding was reptibark. I had two half log hides in each tank. Temps had been a pretty steady 84 degrees f. they each had shallow stone water dishes. they both had uth's and then lamps for when temps started to fall.

After the long chat that i had with several of you i have decided to make several changes. Aspen bedding to replace the reptibark crap, i have purchased ceramic water dishes and smooth hides. I havent brought myself to think about new snakes yet. If you can think of any other changes that i need to make, please let me know. I will do anything to prevent this from happening again.

Thank you all for you help in this awful time.

Laurie

((Laurie)) I'm happy that you are getting some answers. I'm wondering why you switched to "smooth" hides? Is it because there is a possibility that something was growing on the wooden hides? Also, is there a difference with ceramic water dishes? The reason I ask is because I have two wooden hides and a long cork hide (very pretty) as well as a large water dish that is not ceramic. Just curious...
I'm so sorry for your loss. Hopefully we can learn something from this and maybe save another snake....((hugs))

I'm glad you have a probable answer, at least. Do you happen to know what the humidity was?
