Help, My male seems to have a problem after breeding

Good Morning,

My male has been w/ my female for just 2 days now and they have successful joined a couple times but this morning I went to check on them and it would appear that his testes? or something else are stuck out of his vent while everything else is in. They apear very red and sort of fuzzy

I have never seen this before and I am not sure what to do.
There is no info on the net that I can find out about this problem

I need advice quickly..... I think we will be going to the vet this morning if I can not help him quickly at home.

Thanks

Kimberly

They are called hemipenses, and is the male organ. It is split so that the male can mate from either side of the female. How long has it been out? A few of my males have had theirs out for a few minutes right after mating.

I am not sure how long they have been out exactly. I found him like that about 30 minutes ago. I have seen them get together before but I have never seen tis out. there are only the split round balls out........ nothing else....

If its been that long, I would call a vet.
And take him off aspen so the small pieces won't stick to his bits. I would put him on newspaper or paper towel.
Good Luck!

I would also suggest that you keep the paper towel damp with water. The tissue will rapidly become necrotic if it dries out. All internal organs need to remain moist until you see a vet to have the tissue reinserted. One of the reasons why I don't leave males in with females. I breed them in a plastic tub and as soon as they are done, I separate. This allows me to see if the male is o.k. as well as the female. It also allows the male to replenish sperm in between breedings. Hope your guy does o.k.

Back from the vet

Ok, Well.........we are back now. He had a prolapsed hemipenis which just would not go back in. So an amputation and $385 later, my poor guy is resting and will hopefully recover.

I can not believe this happened.

This is a very sweet/tame snake and he is anything but happy right now.

The vet said he can still breed when fully recovered but I am not taking a chance. I would think he is more suseptable to have it happen again with the other one now.....

Thanks for the advice.

Kim

Not necessarily. I've heard of males with only one hemipenes successfully breeding again. If you are not comfortable with it though, then you shouldn't do it. Hope he recovers quickly.
